The premiership sides from VFL/WAFL and SANFL could play prior to the following season commencing, but then you run the risk of having players leaving their club sides etc.

I just don't think this concept would work these days.

Good point, but I think a better word is "possibly".
At the moment the SANFL sides strive to win the SANFL premiership, because that's all there is to achieve as a team at this level.
But if there was something greater than that, the actual "Champions Of Australia", then this would take the place of the SANFL Premiership as the pinnacle of achievement for a side playing in the SANFL.
Maybe in the first year the above scenario described by TB may hold sway, but what if Centrals, for example, had won 6 out of the past 8 Champions of Australia, as well as SANFL premierships. It's a lot more to be proud of.
How proud are North fans of their 1971 "Champions of Australia"?
The "Champions of Australia" could be a great move forward and would probably inject a lot more interest in the second string leagues around Australia.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Spot on , good to hear someone with a bit of vision . It's a must I reckon. Just have to work out how and off you go. Great point about North in 72, some still talk about it and good luck to them.

Well the comparison to the North win in '72 to any proposed future series is completely laughable as back then the leagues were far closer in standard but now the AFL has come in how could any State League "playoff" be seen as a "Champions of Australia" title???

Closer in standard? SA beat Victoria only twice in State Games from the early '50s until '82. That's pretty one sided so I don't know how you can say that era was so much more evenly matched that it is laughable. Or is your angle that since the AFL came into existence the prestige of past trophies holds more glory than those of today? If so then would you value a SANFL Premiership any more or less than say the 1985 flag?
Champions of Australia was the name of the trophy clubs competed for in years gone by, and sounds better than coming up with a more anally retentively correct name just to acknowledge that the AFL is now the game where all the big bucks are. Unless you want to rename things like "The Thomas Seymore Hill SANFL Grassroots Premiership" just to tip your hat to the new King Pin called the AFL. 3 leagues representing the 4 strongest footballing states (Vic, Tas, SA and WA) is cause enough to call it "Champions of Australia".
