Subiaco against an SANFL club

If Subiaco were to take on the SANFL premiers after this season, who would win? I'm not suggesting a particular club at the moment, because of the fact that there is just 1 game and % between 1st and 6th. Subiaco would have to be even more certain for the WAFL flag this year that Central were this time last year for the SANFL flag, when you consider:

Unbeaten after 7 matches, with a percentage of 198.92 (SANFL equivalent of 66.55%)
They beat Swan Districts (currently in 2nd place) with the scoreline of 19.26 to 12.7 in Round 4
Swan Districts are two wins behind (but have one game in hand), and have a percentage of only 102.34 (SANFL equivalent 50.58%)

In the round just gone Subiaco beat Peel Thunder with this scoreline:

Peel 2.1 5.4 7.7 7.8 (50)

How would our members in the West feel Subiaco would go playing the top team here this year?

Was apparently a brawl at half time involving ALL 36 players during this game.


Most of it was missed by the cameraman, who was filming the scoreboard...


Is a big kerfuffle in the West, been exposed that three of the lower grade clubs met with a state politician a few months ago, complaining about the huge chasm between the bottom teams and the top teams. They suggested that the WAFC only cares about the AFL and not the WAFL...

The WAFC did not know about the meeting, and have cracked the sads.

I reckon we should have a State Premiers of Australia series to determine the best State side. Obviously it would only be SANFL, WAFL & VFL. Would certainly increase exposure to the leagues.

Smith leads the rout with Rich pickings

Brad Smith is proof that full-forwards benefit when midfielders like precocious 17-year-old Daniel Rich deliver the ball into the goalmouth.

Marking like a vice and kicking with a smooth, simple action that is almost impossible to counter, Smith booted 10 goals on Saturday to pass the 400 mark and lead Subiaco to a record 157-point mauling of Peel.

No passage was better than the second quarter gem when Rich gathered at centre half-back on the short Digger Daws Oval in Boulder and drove it 70m to Smith, who took it at full stride and calmly drilled the goal.

“It was nice to reach 400 but that is not the sort of thing that makes my season,” Smith said after his 17-mark effort took him to 408 goals.

“Richie is a beauty and has a big future but all young guys can be up and down a bit. It’s great Kyal Horsley and Adam Cockie and Trent Dennis-Lane have been outstanding.”

Horsley (20 kicks, four goals) and Rich (15 kicks) were highly influential in the 29.33 (207) to 7.8 (50) result that saw Subiaco produce the highest score of their long history and fall just three points short of their biggest winning margin.

Subiaco’s previous best score was 32.12 (204) against Perth at Subiaco Oval in 1984 while the biggest win was by 160 points against Perth at Lathlain Park only three years ago.

The result was apparent early when Peel appeared intimidated by their opponents after sharing a plane to the Goldfields and was confirmed in the opening minutes when the Lions launched an unceasing barrage of assaults.

The margin could have been more with Subiaco, who had the advantage of the fluky breeze in each quarter, kicking 6.14 in the last as a violent wind storm made it almost impossible to deliver the ball precisely.

Peel coach Chris Waterman refused to flood the backline to stem the slaughter and also left Matt Battye on Smith and Hayden MacLeod on David Mapleston when they were getting being beaten consistently.

The game was marred by an ugly half-time melee involving all 44 players and resulted in three reports for striking.

Subiaco’s dominant centreman Phil Read could be excused for having Dale Kickett flashbacks after his brief but violent encounter with Daniel Haines at half-time left both players reported and the Lion nursing a sore jaw. It is the third time in six weeks Read has been reported.

He did not return after halftime but Subiaco coach Scott Watters said that was simply a precaution given his history of tight hamstrings and Subiaco’s dominant position in the match.

Former West Coast players Daniel Chick (Subiaco) and Zac Beeck (Peel) also went into the book after separate incidents in a match made more spiteful by the inconsistent umpiring.

Peel held their own in the donnybrook but were unable to match Subiaco’s superior skill and strength though lively forward Hayden Ballantyne kicked three first-half goals.

Beeck beat Luke Newick in the ruck but Subiaco’s mobile big man did plenty of damage running free.

SANFL side easy (even West & South) - well maybe not South ............... or West actually

I would love to see a State Game held between SA and WA with the curtain raiser being a match between the last years Grand Final winners from the SANFL and the WAFL. No doubt there would have to be various rules about how many players they would be made to contribute to the state side, yet something could easilly be organised.

I think that if SANFL sides had to travel to Subiaco, they might well see a loss as the result, still there is only one way to find out!

I think if you asked the players after they had just won the SANFL premiership whether they would like to get back up* for one more game, they would probably crack a can of beer in your face, and tell you to get stuffed.

The premiership sides from VFL/WAFL and SANFL could play prior to the following season commencing, but then you run the risk of having players leaving their club sides etc.

I just don't think this concept would work these days.

Yeah TB, those days have gone.

There is no evenness in our league anymore, the cap-busters have sucked out most of the interst to the point that only 2-3 sides have a genuine hope. Of the rest, one will get a 12 goal flogging in the first semi and most of the rest have already started looking towards 2009. Sad state of affairs.

Rushby - the WAFC do only care about the AFL sides. I would suggest that one or two of their "leading lights" have no idea what colours some of the WAFL teams wear.

Yeah I appreciate that , just a thought thats all. Would certainly add something to all comps. I reckon sides would love to be seen as the best state league club in Australia, maybe we should ask them that ?

It would be a difficult task looking past Centrals domination of the SANFL for the past 8-10 years. VFL sides go top one year and then shite the next, so I don't think a premiership winning VFL side would challenge our best side. Perhaps the best WAFL side would push our SANFL premiers, but I strongly doubt it.

Perhaps we ought to bask in the glory of being the best state league competition in the country, and leave it at that. The Premier of the SANFL should be automatically granted the honour of being named the best state league club.

Doesnt matter if they are top one year then crap the next cos you play them when they are top . I reckon Centrals , Sturt & Eagles fans would have loved the opprtunity to porove they are the best state team over the last 8 years.
