Gone Soft!!!!

Postby evans01 » Fri May 02, 2008 8:34 pm

the once great game of Aussie Rules, footy or wotever you like to call it has gone soft!!!!....

Most of the users on this site have grown up seeing good hard footy!!!......and the AFL has gone out of its way to "rid the game" of wot is now perceived as unduly rough play....

Dont get me wrong I'm not talkin about King Hits, Head High tackles or wot is classed as dirty or rough play but where's all the good hard footy gone......most player are scared of layin a finger on an opponent without being reported.....................seriously its a joke.........................

Do people forget its a contact sport and one thats full of emotion!!!!!........for goodness sake get on with the game...its about time...we played footy the way we used to!!!!!.....

Hondo ..... no need to be specific, it comes down to your perception of the game......its either a case of do you like the ways its played at the moment or not??................would you prefer things the way they where 20 - 30 yrs ago or would you like thing stay the way they are........where most players are to scared to play to their full potential coz of the over interference of the AFL "powers that be".........

its entirely up to you, no need to explain....

This topic just reminded me of a video I have so pulled the vid out and watched it, appropriately named Footy Brawls, now that was footy, Balme. Jones, Nicholls, Muir, Banks, the names go on and on, imagine that group these days, reported, out for life, yes the game has gone soft, very soft, but thats my opinion, I like the fast open footy but some biffo always draws people in through the gate

Before I gave up Footy for Hockey I was always happy about body contact and bumping in vying for the ball - in fact I usually won those tussles. What I didn't fancy was serious injury, I had no way of protecting myself from, due to a knee from behind in the kidney or a deliberate elbow to the face.

As I said at the time, "At least in Hockey you get a stick to protect yourself with!"
[Although the truth was deliberately incapacitating an opponent was less part of the culture Hockey.]

You can't articulate your point.

Are you unhappy at the way the game is being umpired? For instance, being penalised for attempting to spoil a mark from the front while looking at the player and not the ball. Or maybe players being penalised for push-and-shove argy bargy off the ball.

Are you unhappy at the way coaches instruct their players to play? For instance, the don't-kick-to-a-contest mentality.

Don't forget that every game is televised today. I bet you weren't watching any South Melbourne v Fitzroy games at the Lakeside Oval in 1975 to make a comparison in quality of spectacle.

There are great games and crap games today, just as there were 20-30 years ago. And the oldtimers 20-30 years ago were saying exactly the same thing as you.

as i said no need to "articulate" my point you either like the way the sanitised modern game is or you prefer the footy of 20 -30 yrs ago.....quite simple really i wouldnt have thought it would require any further explanation....

a simple yes or no would be sufficient ...

I think what Timothy is on about is the arm-chop & hands in the back rules.
which are totally emabarrassing.
These make the game soft but the players are colliding with greater force.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

It's a discussion forum. Maybe you should have started a poll thread for a yes/no answer.

I have no problem with the arm chop rule. It's the same as retarding a player going for the ball. As far as the hands in the back rule is concerned, I would say it promotes running at the football - like the old days.

try and play one game mate, you'll realise how un-soft the game is. It's quicker than ever, so how you reckon it's soft is purely purile perception.

The umpiring decisions have taken the game to a new level, a ticky-touchwood level, however the game is as physical as ever. If you don't believe what I'm saying, try speaking to Voss or someone who's been in the mix. It's tough on the body.

Please elaborate McAlmanac... chopping the arms is NOTHING like retarding the player going for the ball.... (IMO).

Hands in the back is simply the worst "improvement" in the game. At least this year they have given up paying holding the ball when the tackler is the one holding the ball in.

Unfortunately on a different tack, they're still paying frees for "in the back" when a player has an eternity to get rid of it, but the tackle is slightly off including when the player in possession moves slightly forward and the tackler moves forward in the same motion. When this is paid, its incredibly annoying
