Just because I or others think he cant umpire doesnt equate to having no idea about the game or the rules . Maybe if you think he is great could it be that you have no idea or lack of understanding of the rules ?

I doubt it mate, as the people in the know wouldn't give him multiple awards and give him Grand Final matches, unless you think there's some whacked out conspiracy theory in place.

He has the equal record for most League Grand Final appointments - 10. He has been in the 1993, 94, 96, 2000, 01, 02, 04, 05, 06 and 07 GFs. Ken Aplin is the other umpire with 10.

Bulldogs fans should be pretty happy really. He's umpired 8 out of our 10 GF appearances and we won 5 of them.

Try umpiring Juniors...

I don't get to go to SANFL games anymore :( :( :( so can't comment about how he is going, but I didn't mind Williams as an umpire, I thought his movement and decision making was 1000 times better then some of the more popular umpires, who I felt were lazy at SANFL level and it showed in the decisions they missed.

I umpired juniors (from under 8's - under 16's) for almost 10 years and can tell you it's not worth the $30 or $40 per game for the rule changes and parents that all want their kid to be protected....

For me it was well worth it to see kids in lower grades develop from month to month (and yes sometimes I wouldn't see a team for 6 - 8 weeks at a time at under 8 level) and to be involved umpiring some kids who are now playing at AFL level....

Juniors was much more difficult then the 5 years of Amatures I did because of the parents...
Port Power has 16 years history at Football Park...

The Port Magpies have 40 years history and the two shall never be confused or combined

Gotta say that overall the umps aren't too bad in the SANFL, from last weeks game I saw a few 'interpretations' that I find confusing. Holding the ball, there were half a dozen dead set holding the balls that could have been paid where the guy being tackled drops the ball or doesn't dispose correctly. The other I guess is subect to the AFL where the player with the ball after a mark or free takes a step slightly off the mark and it's play on, this is getting a bit technical.

R. Williams did umpire an underage game last year between the Eagles and Central at Woodville. Wasn't to bad.

Generally speaking the bulk of the umpires do a good job.

However, the umpires are NOT a protected species and shouldn't be treated as such.

If they just do their job and do it properly, then there would be no problems. However, there are a couple of umpires out there that think they're bigger than the game and ruin it. Have a look at Friday's game. The umpires ruined the game as a spectacle and kept North right in the game. When North weren't getting frees, they weren't getting the ball.

As for Richard Williams, he is one of the most incompetent umpires in the SANFL and the sooner he's moved on the better.

The best umpires are the ones that aren't noticed.
