Another footy quiz question with prize on offer

Postby rogernumber10 » Wed Apr 23, 2008 5:05 pm

After the obscure tough one I gave you earlier, let's try this one as a footy quiz with a difference.

Last week at Skilled Stadium, the great Cameron Ling played in his 24th consecutive victory at AFL level (he missed the loss to Port Adelaide last year). These 24 straight wins comprise Geelong's 15-game streak from Round 6-20 last year, the win in Round 22, the outstanding three finals victories and the five wins to open this year.
This equals the all-time AFL record that is currently jointly held by five other players, and Ling has the chance this weekend to hold the record outright in his own right, assuming he both plays and that Geelong wins the game.
name the five people Ling nows this rather strange record with?
1. Jason Johnson, Essendon. 24 straight wins between Round 5, 1999 and Round 20, 2000, in which he missed rounds 6-15, 17-19 and rds 22 to the prelim final of the 1999 season. He played in the loss in 2000, which is why most probably didn't consider him.
2.Paul Barnard, Essendon. 24 straight wins between Round 1 2000 and Rd 2, 2001. he missed Rds 6, 16 and the loss in 21 in the 2000 season.
3. Craig McRae, Brisbane Lions. 24 straight wins between Rd 17, 2000 and Rd 4, 2002. He missed Rounds 18 through to the semi-final of the 2000 year and he missed rounds 1-4 and rounds 8-9 of the 2001 year. Took him a fair while to notch 24 straight wins.
4.James Hird, Essendon. Like McRae, took a while to get his 24 straight wins, needing more than two years as he was missing a chunk of games, wins and all the crucial losses that could have knocked him out. Hird played in 24 wins between round one 1999 and round 2 2001, missing the whole of the 1999 season from round three onwards and then missing the wins in rounds 16-18 in 2000, as well as rounds 21-22 in 2000 when Essendon lost its one game for that year.
5. Stephen Kernahan, Carlton. Kernahan was first to achieve 24-straight wins, taking in a chunk of 1995 when he missed the club's two losses that year, and into 1996. He did the feat between Round 1, 1995 and Round 12, 1996, in that time missing round 2, rounds 7-9 and rounds 16-19 in 1995, and then missing round 3 and rounds 5-8 in 1996.
well played to those who got them correct.

As a point of interest, Jimmy Bartel and Joel Selwood, who both also missed that Port Adelaide loss, are at 23 and 22 consecutive wins just behind Ling on the list of longest player winning streaks.

As a single clue, each of these five players has played AFL football since 1996. As such, you can rule out every single player who played in the great Collingwood, Melbourne, Geelong teams with big streaks in various parts of the game's history. The best that any of those guys got to was 23 straight wins.

As a final point, 65 different blokes in history have now played in 17 or more straight wins in VFL / AFL footy.

Anyone who comes up with one of the answers, I can forward a small prize of a new AFL coaching book that is about to come out. A book has been produced - skills and drills for AFL footy -- which is a 200-page book for coaches that covers;

- basic drills for skill acquisition for kids
- intermediate drills and skills for teams progressing in the game
- advanced drills and game plans used by elite coaches and AFL teams

It hits the market later this week and as such, it's a one-stop book for people coaching and wanting to learn the game, with the front part of the book covering the basics and then going on to the advanced stuff.

Here starteth the quiz, which hopefully can be guessed, worked out, with a bit of a work.

I was headed to the Essendon team sheet for the loss to the Western Bulldogs in 2000 to see who was missing. But then I saw something shiny and got distracted. Might try and look again now...

All five players have played league footy since 1996. No clues though on who is active / retired or their clubs, for the moment.

Can't find team lists.

Fletcher probably had a suspension in the week we lost, I'll lock it in.
