As opposed to all those people with less skills, less opportunities, less advantages who have to do it all by themselves from the moment they leave school. Please don't waste too much time feeling sorry for people like Carey.

I could name loads of people who are considered good blokes but objectively behave as bad as Carey.

Dog_ger is completely right, get of his back.

I think you mean he has only been caught, or not effectively covered up for, three times.
I do agree though he has been the best player I have seen overall.
Our society does glamourise drug abuse [including alcohol] because it suits commercial interests - something needs to be done to stop that before it becomes even more widely accepted as normal....

Society glamourising something is a signpost to the greater issue here. People in general have very few morals/opinions which are absolutely inherent. What behaviour we believe is acceptable is due to the culture we grew up in. It isn't just random luck that people who believe in bigamy are born into mormon families or that people who don't like pork are jews. Carey has basically been living in a culture with a different set of norms to the rest of us. While I won't say he shouldn't still respect the behavioural standards of the rest of the community, it still reduces his culpability and explains his behaviour.

Only if you assume he has never been exposed to general moral values and heard of the Law. Living in the "sports jock" culture may have encouraged him to believe he could get away with ignoring broader societal rules, but it did not make him ignorant of them. So, he is responsible for his choice to try to get away with it because he thought he could, and for his actions.

It may explain his behaviour but it doesn't reduce his culpability.

New Idea, Denton - his agent has been working hard. Nationally syndicated mea culpas are hard to swallow these days.

I think it does Psyber, it didn't just make him think he could get away with it, he thought that behaviour was normal and was probably encouraged to partake in it. Obviously he didn't have a "normal" childhood either and was thrown straight from that to the situation at Nth Melb.

If only Wayne Carey had been brought up in this single parent family....

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/the-madden-report/2008/04/04/1207249470526.html

On one hand I feel sorry for Wayne Carey given his up-bringing as he IMO lacks the emotional development to fully understand right and wrong.

However at the end of the day as others have admitted on here he only has himself to blame (as he admitted on Monday night). Surely after a court case where you admitted guilt for a crime your not sure you committed would be a perfect opportunity to pause, reflect and wake up to yourself.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
