would have thought that the team losing the gf was the second best team for the year; after all they finish second on the ladder that counts.

dont agree that the best two teams make the GF all the time...

BUT - Port after 22 rounds were 2nd on the ladder - that says to me they were the 2nd best team last year (despite playing all the shit teams twice, cause you still have to win)
Port Power has 16 years history at Football Park...

The Port Magpies have 40 years history and the two shall never be confused or combined

As for Port, I think they are missing the hard nuts (Francou, Hardwick, Carr etc) from the 2004 premiership team and currently have way too many receivers. Williams needs to develop a game plan where they can lock down a team instead of allowing their opponent to run all over them.

I honestly feel this current Port team can't win a flag unless they come up with something we haven't seen before.

IMHO, Richmond were clearly the second best team in the AFL in 2007. They defeated the team who were only one straight kick away from eliminating Geelong in the Preliminary Final and if my Aunty had balls she'd be my uncle.

There's a lot of ifs in your statment Hawker. For the record Collingwood did not defeat Geelong in 2007 but Port did it at a venue that Collingwood hasn't played at for 15 years. Port also defeated Collingwood at the MCG so I respectfully decline to agree with your opinion.

Collingwood in 2007 lost to Bullies, Melbourne, Brisbane and Richmond...all strugglers last year, also didnt win more than 3 in a row and biggest wining margin was 33 points plus an OK 13-9 record...2nd best team in the comp? Nooooooo

I would agree with the 22 rounds theory if all teams played each other twice .... but they don't. That's the point.

When you have a big bunch of teams very closely matched it CAN come down to which team has the more favourable draw that decides who makes the top 4. From there, the current final 8 system historically favours the top 4 (I don't any think team outside the top 4 has made the GF under the current system). So, if in your 22 rounds you play the bottom sides more it may be the difference between finishing 2nd at the end of the minor round, or 5th. Finish 5th and history says you are no chance.

Last year was especially distorting because the bottom sides were SO bad that in most cases it was an automatic W. Frustratingly for me, the Crows lost to Melbourne last year  so I accept you do make your own luck.

At the end of the day, Port's favourable draw wouldn't have been enough if they hadn't beaten the Hawks and the Cats away late in the season so credit where it's due.

LOL ... Can of worms here I know, but I wouldn't necessarily agree with that (although can see why people have that opinion) .. Certainly weren't the best team in the Minor round, but it's hard to dispute their Major Round form.

So much discussion over a matter of irrelevance in this thread ... There is first and then who really cares where everyone else finishes up?

Do your eyes roll like that in real life hence the comprehension difficulty?

What part of Kangaroos played 5 out of a possible 6 games against the bottom 3 teams is factually wrong or that hard to understand?

Because you're an easy target. There aren't a lot of Roos supporters around so generally there isn't much backlash with such statements. Thing is that supporters of all clubs would like to have the qualities the Roos showed last season. As i said earlier in this thread attitude beats ability and the Roos proved that. Don't let it get to you Dutchy as all people are doing is taking pot shots at the Roos to deflect attention from their own clubs shortcomings. Hopefully my club has learnt a valuable lesson from yours and we don't suffer the same fate this week as we did last year.

As a Crow supporter, I don't really need to say anything about the Bullies after 97/98.
