Good Friday Football

Probably a silly question but do the players want to play at Easter or would they rather spend a long weekend with family/friends/church/DIY or whatever ??? I suspect even footy players have a life Just a thought.

They prefer to play to play footy JAS, they have 340 odd days a year to catch up with family/friends/ etc.

Not so much of an issue this weekend but if Easter encompassed a round of SANFL they much prefer to play on the Friday as opposed to the Saturday or Sunday as it actually gives them MORE of a chance to spend time with family and friends.

I honestly don't know one person let alone one footballer that catches up with family on Good Friday, I know many that do it on Easter Sunday or Christmas Day though, not having football on Easter Sunday would make more sense as it would give players 3 days off to catch up with friends and family as opposed to playing on the Saturday or Sunday and that's very relevent with the amount of interstate players we have these days.

I believe that the current system of no football on Good Friday is fine. Allow players to always have this day and Christmas day off.

How about we meet you part way: play games over Easter but have Christmas off

Yeah, its not really an issue this year because of the early Easter but it is a big issue other years, play all games on Good Friday and give the players 3 days to catch up with family and friends in a normal year I say.

I know when I played footy that I'd rather play on Good Friday than Anzac Day as there's nothing else to do on Good Friday but there's a hell of a lot to do on Anzac Day.

Wedgie, I personally know footballers who would refuse to play on Good Friday. Having matches on that day would disadvantage some teams.

How about we do a deal, you can have every day from the 2nd week of October right through to the beginning of March to celebrate whatever you want with no sports played in that entire time. That's only fair surely?

That covers the triple time payments of the players and also for the supporters who will not attend due to religious reasons. Still sounding good? Also, no pressure is to be put on players who would prefer not to play due to their faith.

Well there ya go, we have a plan, I agree there should be no pressure on a player to play on that date, just like there was never any pressure on me to play football on Sundays even though it was a competition only played on Sundays.

Wedgie, that day does coincide with when it happened. This is because we know that Jesus was crucified at the time of Passover and this is how the Jewish leaders worked out when the Passover was each year.

I disagree, surely it occurred an exact amount of days after he was born, that same day (if celebrated) should be the one celebrated every year.
You can't have his birth on a set date and then move his death every year, that's just plain ridiculous.
