The only reason Shirley was never traded was because no other club wanted him , his name was dropped to lure other clubs to come to the Crows with offers but no one else was interested .
He has been in the system a long time now and you would think the crows would have unearthed a better young player by now to at least " run with " opposition on ballers .

And this comes from a supporter of a team who has Damon White on their list !!! And Nathan Lonie !!!

I rekon after Shirley got dropped finally last year and then he came back in to the side it was the first time I had actually thought he had shown some real good form on a consistant basis.

Sadly his preseason form thus far has dropped back to before he was dropped !!!

For me now Vanberlo as the #1 run with player and bring in Mackay for Shirley !!!

at least damon white offers something ... height . Shirley adds nothing . I agree damon white isnt the best player going around but he doesnt consistantly get a game . Shirley plays 99% of the time he is available . Another guy running around is doughty , how is he getting a regular gig week in week out ??

Both put their bodies on the line just about unconditionally, though there are superior talents waiting to replace them imo. Far too many times I have watched us go real close to getting the job done and being edged out because the opposition's genuine talent rises to the top. Guys like Dogga and Shirley can't respond to this, never can, never will. I hear the Shirley and Dogga lovers defend him with the "hardness at the contest argument" but lets get real; the Power made a Grand Final last year despite having what many regard as a midfield lacking hardness. A side built on genuine talent makes things happen, not to mention the Crows have no shortage of hardness even without Doughty/Shirley. Get the genuine talent in there I say.

And i thought this board was a open forum were discussions and opinions were encouraged . All i have stated here is a copuple of Crows players eg Shirley & Doughty aren't up to AFL standards and are the weak links in the chain , please correct me if i am wrong ?

The above comments about Shirley and Doughty are correct IMHO .. Role players and the best available within the squad at the time (or most mature perhaps), but neither have had the quality to do much more than they have.

I've always been a fan of Shirley's for his honesty and effort with limitations ... Doughty I've never been a fan of and can't understand why the Crows have persisted with him for as long as they have (it it all).

I've occasioanlly though Doughty was worth a look at as a forward pocket in the past as he is not a bad mark, but there are probably better options if Goodwin, Burton, Edwards, and McLeod are going to prove to be available for the role this year.

Knights is out for Round 1. If the Crows are SERIOUS about "rebuilding", then Mackay has to make his debut. Shirley, given the fact he had a terrible pre-season, should NOT play!!
