Dont pay much attention to scoreboards in trial games but IMHO the match was paid at a cracking pace last night given the heat. Norwood still need a Ruckman so hope Doyle can deliver. Any North supporters can you please give me your opinion on the "spear" tackle by Norwood's Ziggie Alwan? Happened right in front of me and it was a perfect hard tackle IMHO.
Thank God North moved it to Norwood last night, didn't really fancy being at Max Basheer Oval today!

Port defeated South by 58 points in fairly trying conditions at Hickinbotham Oval. Despite an occasional breeze blowing through, the testing conditions weren't enough to stifle the Magpies en route to an impressive win.

Led by a best on ground performance by Jeremy Clayton, who could easily have notched 5 or 6 goals with straighter kicking (2.5), Port were in complete control all day against a Panther outfit that seemed, worryingly for new coach John Cahill, near to full strength. Daniel Hargraves looked set for a day out with two goals in the opening five minutes, but Tom Hateley stuck to his guns well to deny Hargraves any more majors.

Former skipper Mark Clayton appeared after half time and was solid across half back, while Byron Pickett's first appearance in black and white this year was marked with some trademark bumps, one on Sam Elliott that left the latter shaking his head for some time. Pickett slotted in neatly across half forward after coming on at quarter time to give them real bite.

For the Panthers, harder to find good players. Andrew Bachmann had an electric first half, showing great nous around goals, although only finishing with 1.1. Ben Warren presented hard, but also let himself down with poor kicking (2.4), and Crows listed Andy Otten had some very impressive moments. One neat intercept of a handball led to his first goal and he showed plenty of lively movement in the second half. Travis Baird was relatively quiet, although had a couple of moments in the second term, while Dylan "Turtle" Williams battled hard all day.

Steven Eichner looks to be running steadily back into form, recovering from a clumsy tackle that could have been nasty, while Brad Murray had some prominent moments throughout as a focal point.

Hard to accurately pinpoint the crowd number, with so many in cars, but would have been around 600.

glenelg beat west by 58 points 17.12.114 to 9.4.56 well at least that is what i got, i thought grima & mcconnell played very well while a lot others like mouse etc were pretty good while i thought cupido was clearly westies best player although (i know it is a trial) he seems wasted picking up kicks in the back pocket

For those Doggies supporters that couldn't get down to Thebby today, here is a breif wrap up of both the reserves and league's day againsts Woodville West Torrens. It didn't end up being as hot as first thought and there wasn't too bad a crowd considering...

Comments: I thought the reserves played really well, although they kind of got off to a slow start. I like the look of Tassie recruit Kieren McShane, he was impressive both on the ball and across half forward. Should eventually get a gig in the league team. As with a lot of blokes in early trials, skill levels were a bit poor at times but improved as the game went on. Mossy showed his skill and poise until he got slightly injured in the 3rd quarter. Haddin was good throughout the whole day, mainly on a wing, while Sean Brading looked really potent up forward taking good grabs, kicking goals on the run and finishing off in front of goal. He set the game alight kicking 3 of his 4 goals in the 2nd quarter. Brodie Hudson did well dropping back into the hole and pretty much rucked solo all morning (with a bit of help from Gerard McGrath). Poor kicking for goal, at times let them down, but all in all they were pretty impressive. Trent Goodrem showed his class as well as a good set of hands and foot skills. Adam Varcoe had some brilliant flashes and I also like the look of Ashley Duncan off the half back line. Brayden O'Hara continued his good form from last year (until injured later in the year). Damien Hicks would have been pretty happy with his fairly young team.

Comments: Certainly not the greatest effort by the boys out there today. Although it is only a trial there were a few worrying signs in the later game. We were definately exposed down back with a lack of height, but in reality it was our poor skill level that the Eagles pounced on and attacked. We looked very flat from the first bounce and struggled early in the game to be down by about 5 goals at quarter time. The defenders looked outclassed or were let down by their own poor descision making to give the Eagles at least 5 or 6 goals through our errors. Yves had a bit of a shocker fumbling the ball, letting it go over the back or giving away silly frees. Richie, Thommo & Sladey were dissapointing at times with uncharacteristic skill errors and our midfield seemed to be chasing jumpers most of the day. I liked big Earl Shaw in the ruck, he and Scotty Dutschke combined well in there on occasions and our three Power Players showed pretty good signs at times. Daniel Boyle was my best player off half back providing plenty of drive and run. I like his size, he looks fairly versatile and seems to fit in well. Ryan Williams and Matthew Westhoff did a couple of good things with Westy being thrown into the backlines in the second half after starting up forward. The forward line didn't really apply enough pressure but at times did look pretty potent. It was great to see Sponge (Cowan) back to his best crashing packs, taking hangers and kicking goals however, he can still improve on his set shot though. The Gowans boys got plenty of it, used it well on most occasions but suprisingly neither ended up amongst the goal kickers. I'm not sure what happened to Andrew Hayes but he ran out with the team then at quarter time was back in his casuals, nothing too serious we hope. We missed him a bit down back today. It was great to see Luke McCabe back in the number 8 gurnsey and he was pretty impressive, as always.
All in all, it was a pretty uncharacteristic performance by the boys today, however, there were some positives to take out of the game and we still have a few quality players that will come back into the team. I'm sure roy will forget about this one and move onto North on Thursday night.

Heres my thoughts:

Port completely outclassed a lacklustre South by the tune of 58 points in hot and very humid conditions at Nourlunga Oval today.

The players not only had to deal with 38 degree heat but draining humidity as well.

The Magpies started off with a 1-2 goal breeze and used it to advantage. Within a minute Daniel Hargraves had marked and goaled from a 40 degree angle to set the Magpies running. Moments later Mark Dolling marked and goaled strongly from 45 out.

Unfortunately for Mark it was the only play he would see for the match. He would leave the ground on a stretcher and wearing a neck brace after a sickeningly heavy collision, with both a teammate and an opponent. Although hard to see from the grandstand, it appeared to be friendly fire from Luke Saunders, after both player went for the same ball. It seemed Mark was caught with a shoulder and the 'smack' of the collision was clearly audible to the crowd. He instinctively grabbed his head and failed to move for 4 minutes as trainers carefully moved him on the stretcher and off the ground.

After the break South hit back with a great goal from Andrew Bachmann, before Port goaled twice through Murray and Miller. Byron Pickett's sheer presence at a contest caused a South player to fumble, leaving Miller free to goal from 20.

Port led by 21 points at the first change.

Port looked like they would run away with the match after the Magpies goaled twice early in the 2nd quarter through AhChee and small rocket Zane Kirkwood. But South regrouped and replied with two goals of their own through Ben Warren & a classy running goal from 50 by Andy Otten.

It was all Port after half time, kicking 4.4 to 0.3 for the term. There was another stoppage as Brad Crabb came off the ground with what looked like Shoulder/Collarbone damage. The stretcher was called, but he ended up walking off the ground.

Biacsi, who had a great 2nd quarter, goaled, as did the extremely impressive Luke Saunders. Jeremy Clayton slotted through his 1st (after 0.4 in the first half) whilst Harry Miller continued to find himself at the right place, slotting through his 2nd goal on the run.

The attrition continued with Sam Mardling injuring a shoulder thanks to a double hip and shoulder at a contest. He had only been on the ground for 2 minutes.

The last quarter saw the Magpies rest their stars and put youngsters Taylor, Carr, Erskine, Harder, Hall and Watson on the ground for a run. Not to be outdone, the reserves players looked the part with both Carr and Erskine goaling from strong marks up forward.

Ben Warren and Andy Otten both kicked their second goals in the last quarter, whilst Tyson Wait finished off the match with a nice goal from 40 metres out.

The Magpies had many fine players which resulted in the difference on the scoreboard. Their gameplan was largely based on handball out of defence. Whilst over doing the handball at times, it caused South a load of troubles as they seemed to chase guernseys for a lot of the afternoon.

Jeremy Clayton looks in great form early, with only his goalkicking letting him down. Luke Saunders looks to be an underrated pickup for the Magpies. His presence, attack and skill across half forward contributed a lot to the outcome of the match. AhChee worked well across half forward, as did Joel Perry at half back. Harry Miller had a good showing on a wing, whilst youngster Zane Kirkwood showed promising touch both as a rover and in a forward pocket.

South had few consistent players across the afternoon, with Bachmann, Bennett and Warren the best of a poor bunch. Thewlis, Williams and Otten also had their moments.

South look a long way off ready for Round 1, whilst the key to the Magpies this year will be showing consistent form throughout the year. In both 06 and 07 they tapered off after strong pre season and opening month of the H&A showings.

Yes the Eagles didnt play cica again in any trial .Mackenzie and heir played in the twos.Towmey played half a game in the league.Grocke was an out . Couch and Peddler didnt play in either trial.
Can not get excited by this game centrals did not start until after half time .Some of centrals players needed the run by the look of them but its March not Sept/oct .
Some good signs from the Eagles youngsters Staples he took some big marks .Salter did the almost impossible up forward.Biagi improved Jacky will star at SANFL level when not playing for the crows .Mackie what a find in country Vic !!! J Stewart i am glad this guy is still at oval ave hard gritty player .Jarrad in defence I am still up in the air about that move .Roberts has improved greatly in the ruck dept.

Ok so Ron learned from the last two trials fast out of the blocks this week and now a rest until the season starts again.
Any news on Treeby young Roberts hit him hard .

Bayman the Glenelg midfield is outstanding, Im sure as a Bay supporter you would not have been happy seeing N Craig on the grass at the Northern end on the grass alone having a good look at the trial. He would have been very impressed with Sellar as I was.

Grima is a gun and Cranston rucks well, he only has to hold his own to give the best midfield in SA a chance with the ball, Westies are still playing ducks and drakes but as a westies supporter our forward structure will be interesting, non existent at the moment
