Some clubs crowd support 4 away games embarrasing SANFL

Postby - » Mon Apr 24, 2006 12:15 am

Being at Alberton on Saturaday I would have to say no more than 200 of the 4200 there were south supporters. This is not uncommon for South and there are two or 3 other clubs that are sadly lacking in away supporters numbers. West have done nothing for years apart from that loyal block of supporters who gather at the grandstand side of most venues and in front of the Edwin Smith at Adelaide. Glenelg are poor aswell and You can expect 3000 bays people this Sunday at the bay but if it were at prospect there would be lucky to be 350. The Eagles are also lacking in support away from home.

Just the way I feel but it really disappoints me to see such a lack of opposition or away ground support from these clubs. It just makes for a shitty atmosphere. I really fear for South if they make the finals. I dont think they have anything left. Not even a woodwork bunch that would come out for finals. West showed in 2003 Grand final that they can have as much as the eags if they have to and we all know Glenelg would have a respectable showing in the finals.

Agreed. People seem to put time to go to their home games only and rarely go to away games. Its especially difficult if you dont have someone to go with on a regular basis. At the Norwood forum, we choose a position at each ground where we can all aggregate much like the Roosters and the Snouts from the Bay. Its not a cheer squad but a location where you are bound to run in to people you know and where you can make a bit of noise as a group. I also think the SANFL advertising of rounds or at least game of the round would help to promote an interest. Look at the turn out at Thebarton this year.

I agree Jimmy, its not as though South outnumber away team's fans at Noarlunga but when I read the rest of -'s post he does back up his point detailing fans of other teams.
Glenelg are probably the worse, I remember when they beat us at Prospect and it was basically 10 Snouts Louts there to enjoy the win and that was it, even then I had to twist the arm of one of the Snouts to take me to the Bays club rooms as even none of them were going back!!
Same year I go to a couple of Glenelg games at Bay Oval and they were virtually hanging off the rafters.
I know you're always going to have more fans for your team at home games than away but some clubs do travel a lot more ordinarily away than at home.
I've always thought Norwood's fans travel pretty well, Central fans considering sheer distance involved have put a very admirable effort at times too, North fans are always in force away but maybe its because we win at every other team's home ground!

I am always surprised by the fanatical support of the West crowd at BS. They sound really devoted, but either don't come to Elizabeth or keep very very quiet.

South are another whose goals are greeted with silence, but that seems to happen even at Arctic Park.

Funnily enough, I actually really like going to other grounds besides Woodville to watch my Eagles.

Mind you this year I don't have much choice until round 499034!

I like the way everyone says the Eagles fans stay away last week there were not that many of any supporters of any of the four teams !!
But I will say I was very impressed with the crowd numbers at prospect in round 1 we got there just as the seconds started and the ground felt and looked full, on the other hand Glenelg very few fans of both both teams . Im not able to remember the crowd numbers for round 1 and 2 but it was by far easier to park at the bay (almost on top of a gate) compared to prospect.

This Eagles fan lands at every SANFL venue regardless of the distance it is to travel. I'm an Eags fan that lives all the way down south so Noarlunga to me is the closest trip, not neccessarily the best venue to go watch your team. I always go 20 games a season plus finals. I have to practicaly be on my death bed to miss an Eags game, I'm always there no matter how well or crap we're playing at time. I'm just so sick on this sa footy site to hear critics of the Eags always quick to jump on us about our crowd support or lack of it, because I would actually say a vast majority of Eags fans I see at Woodville I also see supporting our team away from home.

Yes agreed holden78. A lot have dropped off, but if you were a tue supporter of the club regardless of coaching situation you would still pay up membership and attend as many games as possible.

I will be sitting in the bradman stand more than likely :D
A true supporter will go if they can no matter what ( with regards work etc I know I cant make everygame), who cares about the coach you go to cheer for the club the jumper the players !!
If people dont go becasue they dont like the coach then they are fair weather fans who needs them, I would rather have 200 people cheering and booing and making noise than the fans that do nothing but run the coach and club down.

Go you mighty eagles .

A supporter who leaves the club because he doesnt like the coach is even worse than a bandwagonner. How about supporting your club instead of slagging it off?

I dont think much of Dale Lewis but that didnt stop me going to see the Legs play last year. We even won a few after a poor start. The Eagles arent out of it but to read your posts you wouldnt know it. You beat us for goodness sake.

Thats why living at Fulham Gardens is handy. 10-15 mins to most "away" games, 25 mins to Elizabeth up the Port Expressway and equal distance to Noarlunga (30kms).

An exception to this rule is when McDermott coached at North Adelaide.
