WEST END BATTLE

Image

The SANFL heads back to Adelaide Oval next Tuesday when last year’s Grand Finalists Central District and Woodville-West Torrens go head to head in the traditional ANZAC Day match now dubbed the “West End Battle”.

In conjunction with the South Australian Brewing Company, the West End Battle perpetual cup is presented to the winning team on the day. Last year’s honours were awarded to Woodville-West Torrens after a thrilling 74 point win over Central District. Having fallen to the power of the Bulldogs at last year’s ‘be active’ League Grand Final, the Eagles will be looking to regain the points in 2006.

The player acknowledged as best on ground will also be honoured with the Bob Quinn Medal. The medal recognises the outstanding career of Bob Quinn, one of the State’s most decorated and courageous players, having played pre, post and during the war with distinction. Central District have dominated the award since its inception in 2002 with James Gowans (2002) and Paul Thomas (2003 & 2004) taking the honours. 2005 saw Luke Powell awarded the honour.

In a pre match motorcade, the SANFL, in conjunction with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, will also honour past SANFL players who have served their country. Past Players including Rodney Pope from West Adelaide, John Quinn and Lindsay McGie from Port Adelaide and Merv Roberts from Norwood will participate in the procession commencing at approximately 2.30pm.

Following is an outline of the day’s activities:
12noon: Reserves Game – Central District v Woodville-West Torrens
2.30pm: Motorcade honouring Veterans who played in the SANFL
2.35pm: Parachutist lands in the middle of Adelaide Oval

National Anthem performed by the Australian Army Band Adelaide

Hopefuly we'll beat them again this year. It will be very nice to extract some sort of revenge on them. Although a win in round 4 for 2 premiership points can hardly be compared to a premiership, nonetheless a win is still a win especially against the Dogs. Going on current form maybe the Eags just but I've learnt over the years not to underestimate the Dogs. One would think we have a slightly better side on paper but that still has to be transferred out on the ground. Can confirm Skipworth will definately not play Tuesday as he was a late call up for the Crows tonight to replace Edwards. One would beleive Vince will play, Don't know about Shattock.

6th verses 7th in the GF rematch. When was the last time that happened.

May not be the recipe to get the average punter through the gate.

And apart from the Tisers small ads, I have heard nor seen any promotion of the game.

And of course, us Eagles fans will be blamed for the small crowd, when it is not the only factor.

This should be a great game. Both teams not travelling well with form and injuries. A win here could really kick-start the season for either side. Shattock has been withdrawn from the Power squad so will be available and Symes has been included so he will be an out for Central. I would guess the only change will be Potter in for the injured Floreani. Symmons didn't look too good with his ankle at the end of the Norwood game so will be interesting to see if he lines up. Redden (son of Mick) might make his debut for the Eagles. Here are the squads:

Eagles:
Cicolella, Colville, Earl, P.Fiacchi, Grocke, Inkster, Jarrad, Lindsay, McKenzie, Oakley, Passador, Pedler, Potter, Powell, Redden, Roberts, Shattock, Spencer, Symmons, Treeby, Vince, Westbrook.

Central:
Aufderheide, Brooks, Currie, Dutschke, Francis, C.Gowans, J.Gowans, Graham, McKenzie, McCabe, Norsworthy, A.Obst, Officer, O'Sullivan, Schell, Scoullar, Slade, Steinberner, Sibenaler, Symes, Thomas, Ware, L.Westhoff, Wilson.

No competition at all dog_ger. Free to air or not, who cares about two Victorian teams in a trumped up game. Can you imagine the AwFul changing it to a G.F rematch like the SANFL.
