Round 1 NAB cup.... only a couple of things can be taken out of footy at this time of year..

This weekend for me there were only 2
Sydney - will be really struggle to create of half back without Malceski and his drive (was in their best 3 last year) - unless a young player steps up

Fremantle - will miss Haselby big time.. Hope it's only his medial - but didn't look good

That's about all I took out of the NAB cup..
Port Power has 16 years history at Football Park...

The Port Magpies have 40 years history and the two shall never be confused or combined

Thought some of the Swans kids looked pretty good though, fair positive for them ... Throw Kenelly and Barry into the back half and should Mattner's form hold up they shouldn't lose too much from Malceski's unfortunate injury.

Quite right Booney but that's still back to back losses against Carlton LOL.

How so? We beat them at Footy Park late last year.

Mattner now becomes a huge part of their plans, good thing they recruited him.

You cant really ever take anything good or bad out of the NAB cup, whether you go out in R1 or win the comp. It means very little once the season starts up. Injuries are the only influence the NAB Cup has on the main game.

Spot on the point I was trying to make..

Malceski is a huge loss for Sydney... Mattner is not a ready made replacement, because his skills aren't in the same class as Malceski - I really rate him very highly and he is a huge loss for Sydney.. I really think this will hurt them more then anything (and actually have a swans friend who has been talking up their premiership chances   now telling me they are in big big trouble)

I rate Malceski highly too and agree with his rating much higher than Mattner, still think they'll have enough personnel back there to create drive though ... Whilst a big loss, I think he's more coverable than some others in the Swans squad

Crikey, Booney's cranky already, bit early in the season to get cranky Booney, you shoulddn't take the NAB cut so seriously!

Im hoping the Saints roll the Cats this week, for 2 reasons, 1) the last thing we need is to go deep into the NAB after a short pre season and 2) the bastards will be in Canberra one week before I am, inconsiderate!

Not cranky (and if so,I have every right to be.GF day last year! ) just get a little bemused by people evaluating form at this time of year.

The teams like Carlton,Essendon and co are just about full strength this time of year, looking to define and refine their systems before season proper.Their form now will be the best we see of them all year.
Both of these teams will go on for a while yet. (Adelaide too).

You're spot on about Geelong. They dont want to get to any type of "Final" this time of year.Regardless of who is playing pride comes into it and the players would go out hard* to win any game they play. With a short pre season and a strong list getting into kick and giggle stuff for a few weeks is (IMO) perfect preparation for season proper.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

I'm not so sure about that Wedge. When the Cats last won the preseason comp we played a pretty much a young squad throughout nearly the whole comp. I reckon even if we rest a few, particulalrly the likes of Ablett, Bartel, Mooney, Ling and Johnson and still beat the Saints then that wouldn't do players such as Lonergan, Gamble, Hawkins, Taylor, Prismall et al any harm. No biggie if we lose, but I just hate losing to St Kilda at any time ever since they cracked the shits about Chappys (accurate) comments a few years back.

A semi (like last season) probably sounds about right though perhaps...that would be the best of both worlds.

If your squad has the depth to rest 6 or 8 top line players after only 4 months off and still be one of the teams to beat in February,Heaven help the team who gets to play you come that last Saturday.(Let the shots be fired  )
