Actually i think Stewart is over rated as an identifier of talent. Some of his selections/drafts for Port were quite poor.

I'm not sure how many were his decisions though.

Hes had some dud drafts for Port (in hindsight), especially this one in 2004

Adam Thomson
Ryan Willits
James Ezard
Fabian Deluca
Ben Eckermann

..pretty much all duds. Then there were the Murray brothers, Kolouritis etc. He did draft a few decent players, but he had nothing to do with the 06 draft when the club picked up Boak, Gray, Krakouer, Westhoff etc.

But it appears hes doing ok with developing the young lads at the Crows so good luck to him.

Just the six pages of debate about one game in Dubai. I guess that means people will be hanging out for 14 squads when they are filed this Wednesday and Thursday lunch times.

My my aren't the Blackbirds fans on good terms with themselves this morning. I believe that Professor Craig has shown his hand..finally adapting a more free running and direct style of play. He has to show his hand too as the squad is undergoing the inevitable generational change with a few younger blokes busting their straps trying to prove that they belong in the AFL.

Malthouse on the other hand has the luxury of playing has cards much closer to his chest. There were a number of seriously underdone Pies who have just endured six days of high altitude training in South Africa (or so they tell me). Throw in a fairly large dose of the 5hits and this equals an extremely underwhelming Collingwood unit.

Adelaide's skills at this stage of the year is well in advance of Collingwood's and they made the Pies pay for a lack of system coming out of defence. Adelaide were all over the Pies but there isn't much point peaking in February - Just ask the last three cup winners.

I still think that Collingwood will finish higher than Adelaide this season but you couldn't have asked for a better start from a Blackbirds perspective.

regards,

REB

Also interesting Collingwood arrived in Dubai only 48 hours before the game, sort of indicates how serious they were...

I am a very one eyed Crows supporter, but also a realist.. and any Crows supporter thinking we are in for an "exciting" year after one NAB game - has got to be joking..

We are talking about a game in Feb for no premiership points, with Collingwood not really interested in the game.. No midfield pressure, no intensity and no real effort from the pies
The Crows may be very fit now, but will the young kids be able to see out a full year??

Above that - there were some positives and it was good to see the young kids coming through.. This is what I took out of the game;
Clear number 1 is Porplyzia - has really trimmed down his figure. Looks really fit and good.
Tippet - shown enough against poor ruck opposition, but good enough signs for a start.
Sellar - good pair of hands, needs to work on his kicking - but looks a nice size for a KPP.
Knights - looks like he's worked hard on his fitness and should be a solid midfielder now.
Goodwin - has really worked on his speed and can be potentially a solid forward pocket player
Burton - still can't kick

For all those that want to can me - If all else fails - remember Carlton has won 2 of the last 3 NAB Cups and finished bottom... or for the SANFL supporters - Woodville won an Escort cup back in 1988 and while I was only 6 at the time and don't have a great memory of it, my dad still goes on about it 20 years later!!
Port Power has 16 years history at Football Park...

The Port Magpies have 40 years history and the two shall never be confused or combined

The few bits I saw of these two on televised games suggested they had potential, like Symes and Surjan. Is there a young player management problem?

I dont think so, its just that Alan Stewart is seen as a champion when it comes to selecting players in drafts. The 5 that i listed above, were all selected by him, but were all duds. In the first draft after he left the club, they picked up Gray, Boak, J Westhoff and Krakouer who all progressed very well in theri first year. Surjan and Symes are both reasonable players, i agree. Dont get me wrong, Stewart did pick up some good players, but he picked his fair share of duds as well.

Now that the season is close, interesting too to see the players suddenly turning up in club injury update lists that are sent out. Just a few examples in the last few hours
Peter Everitt - 6 weeks with a knee
Jesse Smith - 4 weeks with an ankle
Nic Fosdike - 4 weeks with a knee
Darcy Daniher - 6 weeks with a shoulder
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

For the LAST time...

Sellar's kicking is FINE. Those shockers he kicked were into a terrible breeze. Look at the grass when he threw it up in the air, it went behind him in about 0.00000000001 seconds and the look on his face was pretty funny.

And with this new attacking, run and gun gameplan, the youngsters will actually be able to prove to everyone how good they are. You can't look too good playing such a dull, unattractive style of play.

not 100% sure but wasnt he there when these guys all were drafted k.cornes, cassisi, logan, chaplin,s burger, brogan etc..not trying to pick a fight here but just good to see some of the crows young fellas he has had a hand in drafting eg.sellar, tippet, mckay ,symes(who got drafted i think while he was at port )showing good signs when our best results before that were through the rookie draft ..

Was very happy to see Moran and Symes play good games last Saturday night.

I also hope that they stick with Sellar as a lead up forward he will only get better and better !!!
