I guess lyrics about the 20s and 40s are always going to make CDFC fans feel inadequate.

Why? Centrals don't need to go back 80 years for motivation.
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

Norwood's is unimaginative even though they have had it for years and years, whilst Centrals' isn't too bad, even though Hawthorn, West and Woodville have all had it for years and Centrals only adopted it within the last decade??? Can't work that one out.

Thumbs up for North's and Port's (a great song heard far far too often)

Glenelg's "Tiger for me" is far better than any of these or the AFL songs.

Port's is also unoriginal. So is South Melbourne/Sydney's for that matter. Notre Dame victory march, anyone?

Am I right in thinking that Port adopted its current song as late as the 60s or 70s?

Agree with the Glenelg comment. Bring back Tiger For Me....

i remember russell ebert commentating about this on the radio & he said that port were playing south melbourne in a trial match & bob maclean heard it & said that's a great song how about we embrace it & use it which they obviously did, so to answer psuedo's ? it would be late 60's-early 70's as suggested, perhaps spelly can tell us the year

I love to not hear Port's or North's songs, has a bloody catchy tune that sticks in my head.
Glenelg's current song sucks (Richmond should sue!!), Tiger for Me will always be club song IMO, but worst club song goes to the little peter rabbits, how embarrassing!!

North's song wins by a country mile...

"A Tiger for "Me" is soooooo gay* (not that there's anything wrong with that... 8) )

I also am bemused as to why clubs, who once had original songs, ditch them so they can pick a song the same as another SANFL club? I don't get it :? Do they deem the said songs to be unlucky? Outdated?

Did Sturt always have the same song as Norwood? I seem to remember another song in the mid-late 80's (not that they sang it much then)

There's still nothing like hearing thousands belting out the Port song after a winning Grand Final, headed off by Paul Northeast... ahhh those were the days :(

The thing is though, is that Tigerland is probably the best song in the Australia! It just never sounds right when sung by another club, at what ever level!

Norths is the best , catchy tune and the crowd gets behind it

The worst, I hate to say is the Eagles.

The start of the song sounds like a bunch of primary school students busking in Rundle Mall.
There is no real substance to the verse and the chorus is a bit bland.

Better than the Eagle is Angry or whatever the hell it is.
If at first you don't succeed , then destroy all evidence that you tried in the first place

Pretty sure it was the 50s, Williams adopted it after he'd heard it at a South Melbourne game and liked the ditty.

I must admit Im very proud that North have an original song, its a great song.

As far as tunes go (and not originality) I love Norwoods (Sturts doesn't rhyme!!), love its a grand old flag.
Ports and the Bays are fun to sing.
Hate the Yankee Doodle Dandys and the Eagles always gets Little Peter Rabbit stuck in my head, thank christ we beat them most times these days and don't have to hear too much of it.
South's is a shocking version of Carltons, not a good song to start with and even worse now.

Don't you mean, have Norwood always had the same song as Sturt... :)
Sturt did emulate Carltons song for a few years though.
FWIW I think Port and North have the best team songs.

Hmm.. They all barely qualify as songs, just ditties.

And I think if you can actually carry a tune they throw you out of the team, from what I've heard from the rooms.

who needs a song to rhyme :?

sturts song by a mile. i bloody loved singing it after the games (now reduced to listening to it on the radio while it plays over the loud speaker, but still sing along).

i always thought that the legs took the song from us or melbourne?

id like to know when each club had their particular songs...

the one club song other than sturts that i like was the old doggies one....sometimes id go to dogs games with my mates if sturt had the bye and when they won (very rarely back then, but more than sturt :( ) id find myself singing along, very catchy, "this time, more than any other time, this time, we'll find a way, find a way....la la la la
Carn the blues!!!!!

Think this has been talked about of the old footysa site, and Sturt adopted that song just before Norwood did, but pretty much around the same time.

I'll stand corrected about Port's being original then.

It's the same as Hawthorn and Central.

Here's the words.

We're a happy team at Westies.
We're the Mighty Blood and Tars.
We love our club and we play to win.
Riding the bumps with a grin (AT WESTIES).
Come what may you find us striving,
Teamwork is the thing that talks.
All for one and one for all, is the way we play at Westies
We are the Mighty Blood and Tars.

Well i have an original 45 rpm record of the Westies song. Iv'e had it since the early sixties, that's when that giant oil company AMOCO sold them at their service stations along with Super and Standard petrol at 40p a gallon. And you didn't even have to get out of your car to fill up. :D You could also hop into Golden fleece service stations and grab a footy sticker for the car window.
