Re: 2026 Adelaide Footy League - Division 7
Good luck to Podz + Thommo, that's a tough ask - arguably the two most difficult roles in a club (Head Coach + President)... especially if they aren't winning games early - likely to cop it from all angles.
Hopefully it's only a short term option whilst they source someone suitable.. and hopefully they can get adequate support around them.
Sadly, it's a sign of an ever increasing problem across the board - lack of volunteers / support.. If they didn't put their hand up, where would Smithfield be? Where will Smithfield be if they move on?
They're no lone duck in this space though.

Re: 2026 Adelaide Footy League - Division 7
I stopped volunteering a few years ago, best move I have ever made. I would have helped out over 20 hours a week ontop of my work.
Amazing the number of untruths that have been reported about me though

There's no end to the stories of Presidents and committee members overstepping into the footy department. Love these two flipping the narrative and stepping into the committee space.Sticks28 wrote:A ridiculous scenario really - you can’t expect to coach A grade and be running the whole club at the same time - not sure what the thinking is there!
Will be an interesting train to watch.

Re: 2026 Adelaide Footy League - Division 7
Lack of volunteers (and I'd extend that to paid off field staff) is in my view, the number 1 challenge facing sports clubs.
We are really struggling to find anyone wanting to help and are having to resort to paying people to do even the most basic of things. That then needs management which then needs more support and it snowballs.
I reckon the league could help here with some reforms to cut the tape a bit and ease the burden administratively.
I also know of a Super awesome amazing council with brilliant management and Elected Members that are looking at a shared service arrangement that clubs can access, provided by Council. Things like bookkeeping, governance etc. Think that's a pretty good idea.

Shared service arrangement is a brilliant idea.. if clubs / orgs can put aside their egos.

I'm blown away by the level of service expected off the field for medical quals. In my day a crusty old ex footballer who knew how to strap an ankle sufficed. These days we need brain surgeons. At a huge cost. And in my view, through absolutely no fault of their own, don't hold a candle to what the aforementioned crusty old ex footballer could do. Some relaxing of those regs would be awesome.
Do we really need MDOs? I'm my experience they just wear a high vis vest but don't do much other than timidly enforce rules that also don't really need to be there in the first place. Nor could they do anything if shit gets real anyway.
Why can't we have younger water people if they're supervised properly. Kids mature differently. Heck I'd trust some of our 10 year Olds to run water responsibly than our 18 yr Olds. At least they'd listen.
Do we have to have filming of every game?
Do we really need to enter our teams by this time and date and scores by that time and date or we get fined?
Overall I reckon we just need to chill a bit and tukitezymaht

On a seperate note, Adelaide Lutheran very impressive yesterday. Fit, fast and as always well structured. Good vibes and nice to see some familiar faces. Rankine was classy and they have a lot of big fit blokes. Bloody Germans.
Maybe spend some church money on your facilities? It was ok in 1994 but the away change rooms remain a disgrace - especially if you're having triple headers.
Pelletknob or whatever his name is needs a rocket. Maybe play more than one game for your fourth club after dropping a cutla divs before getting on the lip about how much we suck and how good you are

Waterboys used to be 12 or older. I assume watercarriers now need to be 18? If so, yeah, that's overreach.morell wrote:Why can't we have younger water people if they're supervised properly. As for entering teams and scores etc, I'll back the league in.
The job needs to be done at some stage anyway, so its not extra admin to put a time limit on when.
People like to check scores from games they weren't at, and don't want to be waiting til Tuesday to see what happened in other games.
Danny Southern telling Plugga he's fat, I'd like to see that!

Re: 2026 Adelaide Footy League - Division 7
Scores and teams having to be in on time is one of the best changes. It's no extra admin and in fact would make life alot easier for league admin knowing everything should be in by a certain time and they can then follow up ect.
Water boys should be able to be any age provided they are supervised; would be pretty rate things go wrong with waterboys and if they did i would imagine its probably older people who get involved in the game. This definitely should be relaxed and the rarest of occasions something happens deal with the club in question.
Is filming an issue, it's not done by the clubs, is it???
Probably agree with trainers, it would be fair to say each club must have a certified head trainer but making every single trainer be certified is a bit far.
Also agree but the MDO.......that just the old president who would normally have a word to someone if they were carrying on a bit. Like you said there isn't much they really can do and, in my experience, generally just stand chatting with mates whilst doing the odd lap once a quarter for a walk. Maybe for finals but not every week every game.

The scores etc have to be in by a certain time for the few people who read the sunday mail.

That may be the case but no doubt having a time/date makes administrative life at HQ a hell of a lot easier.Mr Beefy wrote:The scores etc have to be in by a certain time for the few people who read the sunday mail.
I don't know how it works there but wrapping up all admin from the weekends games by a Monday so focus can move to the next weekend would make a lot more sense than having am endless timeframe or still be dealing with scores/data entry issues/errors/ admin on the Wednesday/Thursday.
I dont disagree that we over administrated sport...........i scored my 7 year old daughters netball on the weekend. We keep score despite the scores not actually counting because they do have a mercy rule that gets implemented. Fair enough i can deal with that but on top of that each quarter you had to enter what position on the court a kid played and then if they subbed in and out it had to be recorded all this for a game where the score doesn't even count. Surely have the kid registrated and on the team sheet is more than suffice.
However having some timeframes around teams/scores for senior footy is more than fine imo. Given all the other issues things a footballer admin would be dealing with at senior level.

Re: 2026 Adelaide Footy League - Division 7
Re scores and teams. Sure it's probably a good idea and maybe helps the league but it's just another task that needs doing that needs resourcing that we're already very short on - especially game days.
I've never understood why the goal umpires can't use a simple app for scores and entering teams is a waste of time. It usually changes umpteen times anyway
In isolation it's all nothing. At a Marco level it's job #283 that we have to give to a volunteer.

And Re Filming it not an impost on volunteers but the cost has been passed to the clubs
That cost could be used to pay someone to do something else to alleviate the burden

Re: 2026 Adelaide Footy League - Division 7
Us Boomers had to record the scores, any reports and final teams and then arrange for them to get to league HQ by Monday morning AND THEN had to ring the Sunday Mail sports line to meet the deadline for scores and goalkickers.
So easy these days with everything online

Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
