Whilst I agree with you, his average in first innings is 9. That will be something he needs to improve upon sharply!
I know is strange to us Aussies but he is 22, in his 6 tests he has a ton and 3 50's, current average 46, looks a great long term prospect for the poms.

Loving how England are doing enough each test to give their fans some hope, only to be snuffed out quickly after. Hoping that trend can continue tomorrow for that final nail in the coffin.

Another 50 runs make it interesting

Love these small totals to chase on day 5, have seen teams that have dominated test matches capitulate on day 5 chasing small totals

Well played Bethell, didn’t see much of it today, but he’s given the Poms some hope.

As whufc posted earlier, does look the goods and a credit to him for taking his opportunity.

Great to Bethell do well. Plenty to.prove still but he just oozes class. Pope never once looked like likely against this Aussie team over the years and only ever made runs against weaker side outside of one freak innings in India.

Pope was absolutely awful this series absolutely no doubt but slightly unfair on him.

He has hit a hit 100 against every test nation except for Australia (no lone ranger there), most recently 100 against India with Bumrah, Siraj and Jadeja. Also a 100 in South Africa against a decent attack with Radaba and Philander in a game South Africa was bowled out twice for under 250.

He is only 28 years old so in Australian terms is an absolute baby. Got another 3 -4 years before he hits his peak.

That is fair. He was also batting out of position, he was number 6 for Surrey and has actually looked much better suited to that position when playing there in test cricket. He just couldn't consistently do it against good bowling line ups at 3.

Would be good to have a recognised batsman filter on that list. [-o<

That’s my point it’s not uncommon for players to come and have great starts to their careers and then fade away once they get worked out.

I hope for Bethells sake it doesn’t happen and he looks a player but time is going to be the judge.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Bethell looks like a genuine talent. More impressively he didn't carry on like a massive idiot when he made his ton

nah I'll wait to see how he goes in 2-3 years time if he's still producing after he's been challenged by international attacks

Seen plenty of blokes make great starts and then get found out (Phillips, North, Quiney) in 2-3 years
Closer to 2-3 minutes in Quiney's case. Made 9 & DNB in his first test and a pair in his second.
Yeah My bad was thinking more of Jaques

But you can add Welham and Cosier to the list centuries in their debut test but then never really went on

And reaffirm this is not hating Bethell it's just a lets wait and see how he goes when team start to analyse his game and can he adjust.
