Leave approved, flights booked, accommodation and car hire is next. Any recommendations welcome.

Itinerary is now looking like -

Greece 2 weeks > Paris 3 nights > Edinburgh/Scotland 5 nights > London 4-5 nights

Looks like we will miss the start of the EPL season but the SPL will have started.

Yes wife has access to discounts via sixt which is good, with there being 4 of us, plus possibly the FIL in Greece it is tricky as most cars seems small over there (or the bigger ones are expensive)

The drive from Scotland to London is great but I’d probably add a stop in along the way to really enjoy the scenery.
In the UK like many places you get charged a small fee for one way rentals and due to taxes it’s nearly always more expensive to collect your car at the airport. To save some dollars, pick it up in the city and then drop off at the airport.
Diesel cars are still the most popular and most rental agencies will offer you a diesel car. Last trip diesel was about £1.50-1.70/l but cars are pretty efficient. EV’s are becoming popular but I was unsure of charging locations so gave it a miss. Parking can be expensive in the city and in Edinburgh and London PT is the best way to get around so perhaps don’t get your car until you are ready to leave Edinburgh

Thanks Jim, good info.

When we went to UK in 2001 we caught the train between London and Edinburgh but Id like to drive this time and see some of the cities etc in between.

Our timing isn't great as we will be there just after the commonwealth games and just before the Fringe and tattoo which will mean it will be super busy and expensive, we are looking at some places outside of the city due to having a car.

Our list trip we went to Edinburgh specifically for the Tattoo.
It was fantastic and the city was a buzz but yeah it was super expensive (and the UK is already expensive).
To top it off I copped a £60 parking ticket in Edinburgh.
On the way up we stopped at a town called Selkirk that was about an hour out of Edinburgh to save a few $$.
Awesome little town with a great pub and real historic town so great to see on foot. The pub grub was awesome and the beer was top notch. They had a great little bakery in town and in the morning we went in and they were just finishing their baking. Picked up a big feast and surprisingly cheap and we were able to stop on the side of the road a few times for a picnic or snack. Stated at on old manor that was pretty cool. Lots of great little town just outside Edinburgh that will be heaps cheaper. Edinburgh is well connected by rail and many towns probably 30-60 minutes away by rail

30 days until we go to Europe!!!

Start by landing in London for 4 days, catch up with family.

Then get a flight and land in Rome (this is the dream destination for my partner, i've been twice and not a big fan but couldn't leave this one off)

Deal was though that we could see more of Rome so going to do a train to Florence, then to Verona and finally finishing up at the Dolomites spending a few days at each.

From there a train from the Dolomites to Munich.

A flight from Munich to Paris to which is miss 7 dreams destination including a trip to Disneyland.

Then 2 weeks in Ireland visiting partners family.

Bit nervous as i've left most of the bookings to the partner. Despite her living in Ireland from birth until 15 she has never been over to the continent, so ticking off a bunch of bucket list items for her. She wanted to have a crack at doing all the bookings ect despite having a history of making some silly errors. Once booked our ADE to MELB the wrong way around. Also forget her passport half way to the airport when going to Bali. Lucky we left on my time and had plenty spare to go back, get it and just be on time. She also forgot her suitcase on a weekend away camping once :)

So wish me lucky anything could happen. I will say in fairness to the partner she always finds a way to make the best out of bad situations!!!

Yeah we got mine and my daughters.

Partner is just waiting on her Irish passport to come through. She is a dual Irish/Australian citizen but only has an Australian passport. Apparently, she doesnt qualify for an ETA and either has to have an Irish or British passport or pay $600 pounds.

Getting a bit tight now but her Irish passport is due to arrive 23rd of this month, we leave on the 4th March.

If it doesn't come in time we may have to use her Australian passport to get in and suck up the large fee which would be far from ideal given the Irish passport is a quarter of the cost of the fee.

I think it gets even more complicated given my partner is from Northern Ireland but she refuses to have a British citizenship or passport.

Parking in the UK sucks...

There is not such thing as free parking... Apps have to be downloaded and there are different apps for different carparks to be able to pay and park.

Bah Humbug..

This situation keeps getting a bit stickier only 13 days out especially regarding out daughter.

As we found out yesterday our daughter is automatically considered an Irish citizen due to her mother being Irish. Ireland being one of the few countries where this rule/law exists.

Therefore, our understanding is that she could be affected by the British dual citizenship rule which would require her to enter England on British or irish passport.

However other sections of the rules read that this rule only affect British dual citizen which then implies our daughter being Irish is not infact British therefore she is not considered a dual British citizen.

Well funnily enough thats the way it maybe planning out.

My partners passport is now 3 weeks late and is at the printing stage. Has today to be printed and then needs to arrive in Australia within 8 working days. Sounds like we will have to get her passport delivered to family in Ireland and then get them to express DHL courier the passport to us as the quickest way.

If that doesn't eventuate and our daughter Aoife is going to be classified as an Irish citizen then they are going to need to go to our next stop which was Rome. That means ill go to London for 5 days as planned to catch up with my family whilst they head to Rome earlier than expected and we will catch up there.

However the Irish embassy believe we wont have any problems getting our daughter into England as they won't care for the Irish law, but they would expect the Irish customs to question where her Irish passport is as a citizen of theirs. The ironic part is that my partner is only Irish by choice not by birth as she was born in Northern Ireland.

If she was born in NI that makes her automatically a British citizen technically. It’s all getting very messy over there now

But for some comfort

UK law professor Elspeth Guild

"For travellers embarking on a trip to the UK next week who had British parents but no visible link to the UK, she had some words of comfort.

"Unless the place of birth stated on the passport indicates that the person may have birthright citizenship somewhere else, it is virtually impossible without a detailed investigation to know whether someone is a dual national. This is particularly so where citizenship was acquired through ancestry rather than place of birth."
