The Club has also appointed former Western Bulldogs defender Liam Jones and former Adelaide Crows midfielder Scott Thompson as development coaches.

Thompson started his coaching career in 2017 as a development coach with Port Adelaide after 308 games as a player with Melbourne and Adelaide.

Following a break from coaching at AFL level, Thompson went and coached Unley Mercedes Jets in Division 2 of the Adelaide Football League.

Anyone ever got an AFL assistant job straight from the AdFL before? Great stuff

Not D2 related directly but compiling a list of best footballers to have coached in the AdFL the last couple
of decades could be a fun diversion.

Thompson, Macca, Darren Jarman, Andrew Jarman and Scott Hodges (as blokes who were all Australians) immediately come to my mind in terms of decorations in playing career but I’m sure I’m missing plenty

Rung below of Peter Caven, Weed and Darren Mead come to mind as good best 22 afl players but not quite to the class above

Nah apparently none of those could even carry Chad's white board.

This one from Goodwoods football chief's self congratulatory social media post "This isn't just about bringing elite-level expertise to the Adelaide Footy League (though we're certainly doing that). It's about someone of Chad's standing recognising the value and importance of community football"
So that's why he took it. He's doing it because he recognises the value of community football.

Hodges was never All-Australian but he played AFL and was a Magarey Medallist so on that score you can add Brett Backwell. Jade Sheedy another MM to coach AdFL in last 20 years. I know its 31 years ago but Mark Naley coached Brighton in 1994 in the SAAFL. He warrants a place in the top rung of Jo's list.

To be fair he said they were "all Australians" , I guess he meant they weren't from overseas

Cop Hodges.

But Magarey’s won by Macca, Hodges, Jarman are worth more than Sheedy and Backwell’s for mine.

Tregenza and Anderson are good shouts but I suppose also the same generation as Jarmans etc

To change the topic slightly, since post 97 when the AFL became completely dominant, is Thompson by far the most accomplished player to coach? Lindsay Thomas might now make a second? Following that are we getting into Jack Trengove as a playing coach?

Jack Trengove coach?? He may have had a coaching role in his stint at PAOC but pretty sure Pitt was the coach when Trengove played for them.

This ones evidently bigger than previous years, even my lad who has been there 20 years through Juniors etc is on the move, something i never thought he would do.

Very lucky they have a strong womens contingent i think
