Assistant coaches are required to know before August 1. Chads obviously been told, told Kane who told Cleary who broke the news forcing the club to put out a statement. Chad wouldn’t be the only assistant coach in the comp that already knows they are out of a job next year

They have to reappoint them by 1 August from memory. That gives them time to get a new gig for next season. I'm hoping Carlton move on their entire assistant coaching squad too.

Interesting last comment by Kane on Chad last night, that he thinks his loyalty to Hinkley cost him his job

How have any of them been there for so long...being so (mathematically) close to a GF I guess makes clubs hesitant to change.

There's no right or wrong answer but an interesting discussion. Koch has not hidden the clubs intent to work around stability in the key positions of president/chairman, CEO, Footy boss and Senior coach. No flag but the last 6 years have been pretty solid on field.

Meanwhile Carlton who change coaches like some people change jocks are a basket case and their decision now, I think amber has alluded to him preferring to stick fat with Voss, has to decide if they change again or look to stabilize.

But to MW's point I know the PAFC executive wanted to continue to chase top 4 berths. Then the debate about not having the coach or cattle to go to the pinnacle commences but that was so yesterday on here.

I'm all for not bottoming out, there are no guarantees with stripping the squad back to base bones and returning to the top. It's bloody hard and sides like Adelaide and Melbourne bucked that trend recently, lots of clubs who tore the list to pieces are still down there looking for answers.

Would Chad consider the North Adelaide head coach role? Would that be considered a step down? In pay it would I guess.

Wouldn't be much different in coin, that's why the clubs have been all over the AFL to lift the soft cap. Assistants are in the $140-160k range for most clubs. SANFL coaches wouldn't be far behind ( Godden was on more at the Eagles 6 or so years ago )

In a comp with 18 (soon to be 19, then likely 20), the strategies of clubs is going to be interesting. Like you said, bottom out or maintain a top 4/top 8 position, what do you do? Bottoming out for a GF tilt is one thing in a 18-20 team comp, the odds are very low you get into a GF or win it, but top 4/top 8 provides financial stability especially for a club like Port.
