why dont the AFL just paint a line across the ground for the back to the 9m rule???

They do, it’s just a dot or small line in a dark colour to be unobtrusive to the crowd but clear to the players and umpires.

That's the dot about 25m out, for the 'mark' on a kick out after a point.

The 9 does not have a marker, but can clearly be seen as it's the top of the square.
