Some really concerning results in that lot. Strath and GPE being the big concerns for the rest of the season. They're gonna cop regular floggings i feel.

GPE host Yank - Both with the one win but Yank have been a mile more impressive with several narrow losses and should easily account for GPE today
Yank by 46 points
Myp/Sell host E Bay in the match of the Day. Vital game for both teams to stay in touch of the Top 3. Both teams have been solid this year so far without being spectacular. Home ground advantage with cold and slippery conditions may favour the Mudlarks enough to get them home.
Myp/Sell by 16 points
Victor host Compass. Victor are undefeated and certainly wont be losing this one. Compass are certainly in the mix for a finals spot but are a fair way off challenging the top few as has shown in their results so far.
Victor by 56 points
McLaren host Strath. McLaren would be considered Victors main danger to a flag this season. They had a tough battle last week against the Creek before getting the win. Will be no more than a training run this week against Strath who have sunk to a level not seen i the last 50 years.
McLaren easily by 100+
Creeks host Willunga. These 2 teams have had an extraordinary amount of close finishes including draws over the last 25 years and today may see the same again. Willunga after a rare finals miss last year have bounced back and are on track to play finals. Have had narrow but good wins over Bays and Myp/Sell whilst their only loss was to McLaren and that was pretty comprehensive as well. Creeks have been going through a tricky phase the last 18 months and whilst only winning once in their past 12 matches they are being very competitive for large portions of their games. As they showed last week by matching it with McLaren for all but the 3rd quarter. Creeks dont have the match winners they once had to deliver knockout blows and will again have to be content with a competitive loss i feel ?

No real surprises. Bays had a crucial win over the Mudlarks who are on track to defend their title from the Elimination Final.
Yank put paid to GPE in the 1st quarter and thereafter it was an even contest
McLaren traumatised Strath and their supporters with a monster win.
Victor smashed Compass to emphasize the gap between the middle of the road teams and the genuine contenders
Willunga bullied the Creeks in the wet. After an even 1st term the Creeks were brushed aside by the Demons. Losing Kellock with an elbow injury early in the 2nd term didnt help the Creeks cause along with being physically outsized and outmuscled in the challenging conditions. Creeks not helping themselves by being 2nd to the ball too often and giving away too many frees with clumsy tackles.

Yes seemingly an easy round with top 5 vs bottom 5. Hopefully the margins won’t be too crazy.

Re: Great Southern Football League
All 5 faves won comfortably although some of the margins were a little less than predicted , maybe to do with the windy conditions and some teams missing some key players?jackpot jim wrote:Round 7

Incredible to think Victor only led Strath by 2 points at 3/4 time in a very low scoring game. Guessing came home with the wind? Also see they had a number of key players missing which partly explains the closeness of the scores til 3/4 time at least.
Creeks were missing a host of key players (Bruce, Tonkin, Kellock, Bates, Rothe, Roberts) so the 10 goal loss certainly wasn't surprising. They'll be hoping to get some of those back in the next week or 2 or they'll be at risk of losing to Yank and GPE. Reports are that Clifford may not be far off from resuming after missing almost 12 months with an ACL which will be a welcome addition to the battling Hawks as he is a quality player.

Got himself a red card in the 1st quarter on the weekend, not ideal for Willunga with them playing Victor next week.wenchbarwer wrote:He certainly cashes in against the mid-tier teamsUpThere wrote:big nobes putting on a show for willunga with 7

Re: Great Southern Football League
Looking at the current standard and results of the GSFL and the SFL has the time come for the leagues to combine and have two divisions?

Re: Great Southern Football League
It certainly has some merit with the amount of 100 point margins. Last week there were 3 and that excluded the bottom 2 from last year, who played each other. That is a worry and it is embarrassing. The GSFL have their head in the sand. Then have the audacity to say how disappointing Strath are this year. They are playing to the rules, have junior sides who are flying and have good facilities. That is local footy.
But.....there is a big standard gap between leagues, I would be confident that Strath could knock off plenty of teams around the state but they cant here because they are not spending the $$$. Even Goolwa, lost to Christies by 21 points in a trial and Christies have won 4 games!! That is mind boggling that they have been able to do that in the SFL. The teams they have beaten must be pretty poor. Echunga are 5-0 in the Hills country and Goolwa beat them with a leg in the air by 40 points. They have won every game in the Hills easily. They would be bottom in the GSFL
Step one for the GSFL is to sort the points system out. A system that was supposed to even comps out and it has had zero impact. In the GSFL, Willunga, Pongy, McLaren and Victor have all had points assistance. Why??? Why would the 2 grand finalists get allowed points help. Yank got points help but Goolwa didn't and Encounter Bay got knocked back on a player who moved to the area. Makes absolutely no sense. Secondly, is the salary cap. Get rid of it. There would be $5000 plus per week difference between top and bottom. And don't start the retention and juniors and he is a friend and his dad played here etc etc. The premiership table is talent based and the talent is $$$ based. It is that simple. If it wasnt dollars based, why is ex Bay junior, whos father was president, playing for cross town rival and why is gun Strathalbyn full forward going to Keith every year.
Scrap the cap and dont mess with the points. Simple

Re: Great Southern Football League
I wouldn't get too carried away with trial game form when judging each league's strengths, the top few teams in both leagues would be pretty comparable, it's the bottom teams and the massive margins that are bringing both competitions down.

Re: Great Southern Football League
Agree with trial form but Goolwa lost every game last year by 140 odd points, added 3-4 blokes and won a trial by 8 goals. The team they p played, won its first game 193 to 38. Trial or no trial, that is a big standard gap. Pick any side outside the top 3 in their comp in SA, bring them to Strath Oval on a Saturday, I know the result. The bottom sides aren't bringing these comps down, I challenge anyone to watch Yank, Goolwa or Strath this year in games that have been filmed and then tell me, its not a standard that stacks up elsewhere

True - should have referenced “country” footy. Hard to compare to suburban stuff
I think the SFL / GSFL combo is a great idea, all I’m saying is that the GSFL could tidy a lot up first

I agree with you, I think combining the leagues and having 2 divisions would be perfect. Allows the weaker sides to rebuild without as many beltings, while the top division would be as good as any going around. Sadly, if the SFL committee are anything to base the idea off, they fail to see further than 5 minutes down the road, and would only realise they're in trouble before it is too late.

Re: Great Southern Football League
It’s easy to complain about the points assistance Willunga, Pongy, McLaren and Victor. How many have used the assistance to recruit players? But player retention is a big problem with some clubs eg Goolwa and not sure this filters down to junior teams. Are there any rules about juniors where they can’t be poached by other clubs before the age of 17? I know stories from other leagues such rules were in place to stop a clubs recruiting players by buying them shirts, socks and boots.livefooty wrote:It certainly has some merit with the amount of 100 point margins. Any conversation requires SFL clubs to have an associated Netball club to bring with them
It is what makes GSFL so much more of an enjoyable day as it has an entire community/town feel to it.

Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Re: Great Southern Football League
You’ve made some interesting points, some I totally agree with. The administration of the points system certainly raises many questions, and the salary cap is a joke. $5000 a week difference between top and bottom is big call though. Re the ex-bay player….you left out some pertinent facts.. by the time he left south, his father was well entrenched at VH and president of the Roos club, his mates and former teammates were at VH and his GF (now wife) also plays netball at Vh. May have had a bit to do with his decision to play there toolivefooty wrote:There would be $5000 plus per week difference between top and bottom.
