Re: Things that you rate!
I coached a kid 11 years ago at primary school footy and in the last 12 months he has burst onto the SANFL scene, Ive been following him closely and enjoying him making it at this level, anyway I was at the local footy on Friday night and he saw me and came over for a chat, I couldn't believe he still recognised me let alone approached me, we had a great chat and even let me know he has had some contact from the highest level. A genuinely humble kid who is just enjoying the ride, even a bit bemused about what he has achieved, made my weekend.

Dutchy wrote:More grateful than rate, son was filling in for the opposition yesterday as they were short and copped a knee to the back of his neck, ironically by one of his mates. Game stopped, ambulance called and off to Flinders for the next 9 hours, thankfully he is 3 months from being 18 so got taken to paediatrics straight away, past 5 ambulances that were ramped. Long story short he cracked his C7 and T1 vertebrae but nothing that will impact him long term other than being very sore for the next few days, could have been so much worse. He (and my wife - I wasn't there) rec'd great care from all which was awesome, very grateful.
Above son played his first senior game of footy yesterday, unlike myself he is fairly skinny and not fully developed yet and because of this and his injury last year he got a permit approved to continue to play u18's this season, however 2 weeks ago he decided he didnt want to play in a team that wins by 100+ points every week and decided to move clubs to play seniors, albeit C grade, with some mates.
First couple of minutes he chases down an opposition to get HTB and slots the first goal of the game from 45m, that eased my nerves a fair bit about him playing senior footy, Mum still stressed with every hit he took though!

Too right, I will not be the slightest bit upset the day any of my kids tell me that they don't want to play football again.
One of my daughters has had 3 trips in an ambulance from footy grounds and she's only 22, the other daughter spent over twelve months in a moon boot due to a smashed ankle (that was during a soccer game put she plays both every weekend) and the lad does his hammy or driver at least twice a year (he's an apprentice chippie).

It was a weird feeling as my 22yo is very solid and handles any physical contact very well due to his size, so Ive never had the fear that I had last weekend with the 18yo.

Long term injuries are terrible, you never stop being a parent and you just want them to have a good run at it. Or get out without any long term damage.

I'm over 6 foot, but my boys tower over me. That being said, they're always FF/CHF or rucking, so plenty of contests and big hits. My eldest has had a couple of shoulder injuries, he goes in the hardest too so I'm always slightly apprehensive.

3 daughters and all horse riders. I've fallen off twice and very luckily and narrowly escaped any injury whatsoever.
I refuse to watch them on the horses as my anxiety just feeds through to them and the horse. Thats the partners job.

My daughter has followed her brothers into footy. She's a bit of a rake and I'm not sure I'll ever get used to seeing her get knocked over in a contest.
Or like I have mentioned in another thread, bloody tunneled in the ruck!!!

One daughter playing Aussie Rules has had two season ending knee ops and a season ending AC joint. Other daughter playing soccer has had an ankle reconstruction last year. Never gets easier.

Yeah, we've all been there, although I'm not quite sure I'm ready to be called "Pop" yet...

I remember you asking about that op, how did it go?
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Much longer recovery than expected. the swelling lasted a good 4 months, and she was only really right to go by March (op was August from memory) after getting clearance from the physio. She's back playing again, but not super confident yet you can see her hesitation. It will come with time.

Unfortunately not!
Hyper mobility runs in my family, so the one with the knee injuries (one on each knee) were because of that. Her AC joint was purely getting crunched by a rather large Golden Grove player. The ankle for my other daughter was from a crude tackle, not much could have been done about that one.

It's funny, hyper mobility either completely screws you over or saves you from catastrophe (Sam Darcy's knee, for example).
One of my lads avoided what looked to be a certain ACL because of lax joints.
