Money. I can't believe the hike in fees over the last 8 to 10 years for some SANFL clubs.

At community club level, we did question why the 16's were brought in in the first place and we always thought it was a money making venture by the SANFL for their 8 clubs.

Mate, there's U14's now, all buying the full club kit and whatever expenses go along with it.

Do clubs still have the U13, U14 & U15 games anymore? Playing 3 or 4 games a season, prior to the U15 city & country champs.

SANFL clubs? Yes. As a community club, we're continually sending kids to our zoned SANFL counterparts.

And yes, the 14's are ramping up to a full season as well. Good money spinner by the SANFL!

Yeah, SANFL clubs, that was a bit confusing on my behalf!

The Bays used to have year 4/5 and year 6/7 teams, which then fed into their Matt Bode cup. About 80-odd kids, aged 12 to 13, played a 4 team round robin (from memory no fees were required at that point). They'd then pick a squad for the U13s, with the another heap being looked at by various league volunteers in the junior comps.

You'd only pay fees if you made the U13/U14/U15 squads, and these weren't huge, maybe $100? Reckon the kids got a hoody and a polo, nothing outlandish, plus shorts & socks.

It was still a half season in U16s when I first went through with my eldest, they got a full kit but I reckon the fees only really covered all the merch. Heard last year the fees were up to $600 bucks, with a squad of 50 or so. Multiply that by 3 grades and it's a great little boost

I'm in the junior football role at our Community Club and the try outs and selections are mostly mid season, with the exception of 14's because their season was aligned to conclude at the start of the Community Club season. Similarly, the try-outs are free, but the squads are sometimes larger than the game day squads for obvious reasons. At least in 14/15's they genuinely seem to be happy to rotate players through and not focussed on winning. I don't really think clubs should hang their hats on winning 16's and 18's flags, however I realise to a coach that is also a big thing to put on their resume.

I've heard West are the most expensive to play 16's and 18's for and Glenelg are up there too (but that's dated knowledge, it may be cheaper now). I know in my area, North are cheaper than Norwood and Norwood has a much bigger squad than North. Centrals I understand are wedged in the middle of those two clubs.

Also, North have a sponsorship deal which means if my son gets sponsored, the club gets more money out of the deal. Good idea by them I must admit!

I'm pretty sure West have the same deal, where sponsorship comes off of fees. The $600 I quoted was for Glenelg for last season, Souths fees were $350 in 2023, there were other clubs charging up to $700 that year.

Its certainly not a money making exercise by the clubs, I can assure you of that, its actually the opposite.

16/18's should be all about development of every squad member, 90-95% of them are going to end up back at community footy, making them the best footballer they can be - no matter what level they end up at - needs to be the priority.

Certainly from my experience winning games of footy is not prioritised over development. Hearing kids spend long periods on the bench is disappointing to hear, kids are going to make mistakes and these mistakes are great learning opportunities, not for punishment.

Not 100% convinced on this. SANFL advised clubs in 2023 fees should be $500. There were clubs charging up to $200 extra.

I'm the same. Whilst the intent might be a good one, the opposite can be happening at some clubs.

However, we tell our kids to stay in the SANFL junior system as long as they can. Some can't get to training easily, some can't afford it, some aren't good enough and they come back, generally better for the exercise.

Is there still regrading in the juniors? I assumed if there was it would be after last week.

We had an umpire's mentor come out to our oval last week/week before.

She asked the coaches why the Under 8's had those discs out on the oval.

Yes, that's what we're dealing with.

Youngest daughter’s team has gone down a div after being smashed every week so far. The team we played on the weekend were also winless but easily accounted for us by over 10 goals. The opposition players were having a go at their own teammates if they kicked a goal. “You’re supposed to miss so we can go down!!!”…
Yep, they got put down a div too.

And ^ is the problem with regrading. Teams who need it sometimes get re-graded but some coaches are out there to win flags unfortunately.
