Re: Australian International Summer 2024/25
Only change i would have is to maybe give Lyon a slightly higher score 5.
On what was seam friendly pitches Lyon was never going to take bags of wickets. What he did well however with the limited overs he got was keep an economy of under 3. This was valuable especially given historically the Indians look to attack the spinners. His overs at the low run rate we extremely important in given Cummins, Boland, Starc that much needed rest. Especially given Marsh wasn't really a fifth bowling option.

Re: Australian International Summer 2024/25
I think 4 is more than reasonable, he had a shit strike rate and an average far higher than any other bowler, his economy rate was low because the Indians generally batted slowly for survival.whufc wrote:Only change i would have is to maybe give Lyon a slightly higher score 5.

He also bowled more deliveries to the slower scoring Indians:
Between Sundar, Jadeja and Rahul he bowled 331 balls for 115 runs (2.08), add in Jaiswal and it's 453 balls for 178 runs (2.36).

He has been ultra consistent for a long time, one lean year since 2013.

Reflecting on this thread and the number of pages compared to last year, I wonder how many pages we would've got to if we had a few head wobblers on this site...

Re: Australian International Summer 2024/25
Bit easier to compare them when Root's career has come to an end I reckon, but I'd be picking Ponting.

Re: Australian International Summer 2024/25
Joe Roots average of 35 in Australia with zero centuries means he will never be seen by Australians at the same level as Ponting. An overall average of 40 including in England so even that is 'modest' so to speak.
Maybe that's a fair enough reason as well given he has failed to produce against the best country during his period.

Re: Australian International Summer 2024/25
Ponting averaged 25 in India so he wasn't perfect. Root does need to produce here no doubt but he's still an all time great. He's literally carried an incredibly average England batting side for a decade. His next best batter over that period is Stokes or Bairstow who average mid 30s, he didn't get the luxury of playing with batting partners Langer, Hayden, Martyn, Clarke, Hussey and Gilchrist.whufc wrote:Joe Roots average of 35 in Australia with zero centuries means he will never be seen by Australians at the same level as Ponting. Re: Australian International Summer 2024/25
Have to take into consideration Pontings averaged dropped significantly in his final few seasons where he absolutely stunk it up at international level.

True but you’d have to take those runs and centuries from him tooArmchair expert wrote:Have to take into consideration Pontings averaged dropped significantly in his final few seasons where he absolutely stunk it up at international level.
Both very very good players

Re: Australian International Summer 2024/25
I'm not saying that the stats aren't similar just mean for the most part the average aussie cricket fan has probably only ever seen Root hit 4 centuries............ if they happened to stay up to 3am to watch.
How many people have seen Root hit all the hundreds his hit against Sri Lanka.
With that in mind when you get posed the question most people are going to significantly sway towards Ponting even if the stats suggest its real close.

100% don't disagree was more pointing out that i doubt anyone on any australia forum is going to say Root based on what they have very likely seen of Root.batmanbegins wrote:Ponting averaged 25 in India so he wasn't perfect. Re: Australian International Summer 2024/25
Yeah shit thinking about it I've definitely watched more of Root than any other player over the last 8/9 years now plus watched more highlights, listened to more podcasts, watched more YouTube videos and read more articles with him as the centrepiece than any other player in the game. Whilst he should surpass Ponting I've still got Ponting ahead of him for now.whufc wrote:100% don't disagree was more pointing out that i doubt anyone on any australia forum is going to say Root based on what they have very likely seen of Root.batmanbegins wrote:Ponting averaged 25 in India so he wasn't perfect.
