Very confident and intelligent innings until then. The commentators are going on how he was distracted by people moving above the sight screen the ball before, but he’s always going on about that so I doubt that was a factor.
On that point, the sight screens are massive these days, so I don’t get why there needs to be any restrictive movement around those massive screens, but batsmen still manage to complain about it.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Those people behind the sidescreen were of Iranian appearance too

Anyone else just notice how Carey waited until over was called before he moved off to lunch…
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Well batted Webster. For mine, has been way more impressive than Konstas in his first 4 sessions of Test cricket.
I’ll go out in a limb and say that he’ll have a longer Test career than Konstas. Could be completely wrong, time will tell.

Notice Carey play a superb cover drive in the last over before lunch. Chappell would have had a heart attack.

Yeah Webster looks great but for different reasons to Konstas.
His a 30 year old who’s spent years in the shield and knows his game really well. It’s apples and pears as to where they are at in their development.
Webster looks like he could be ready made to be a strong number 5-6 at test level.
I like that both haven’t be overawed by test cricket and have come out looking to score. That Webster pull shot was delightful.

Don’t think so, 19 v 31 I reckon time is on Konstas side

A commentator saying Smith might have had a lapse in concentration because of the sightscreen what evers
Doubt it
Knowing what we see in The Blonde Don he was probably more distracted about needing 5 runs to get to 10,000 test runs

From the very small sample size so far, doesn’t appear to have the technique, nor temperament to succeed at Test level. That said, a long T20 and perhaps One Day career beckons.

Wouldn’t stress to much about the technique, Smith, Head and Harry Brook have broken all the rules on what technique you must have to succeed at test cricket. (Bumrah and Murali from a bowling point of view)
There ain’t no V anymore it’s a 360 circle now baby!!
Definitely has to learn how to bat at paces and learn about his hitting areas.

Re: Australian International Summer 2024/25
For someone who says “watch the ball, watch the ball” whilst doing his worst Sid Vicious impersonation as the bowler is on the approach, he hits an awful lot of premeditated shots.
His ‘match awareness’ also has a lot to be desired. Is he playing for himself first, second and third, and to hell with the team? Dunno, can’t read his mind.

It’s only against Bumrah that he bats as crazy, plays the ramps etc. His yet to get out playing a selfish shot, infact all 3 dismissals have come from pretty standard shots.
Interestingly this series his the third highest scorer against Bumrah with the best average
Head 100 runs vs 5 outs
Smith 43 runs vs 3 outs
Labuschagne 32 runs vs 3 outs
Konstas 35 runs vs 1 out
Carey 24 runs vs 2 outs
The other bats aren’t worth mentioning.
I would almost say his been completely unselfish putting himself at risk and being courageous against Bumrah for the betterment of the team.
Just needs to find the ‘balance’ against the other bowlers.

What about his diet?
Could benefit from reducing his intake of fig jam perhaps?

Yeah looks it’s obvious he can wind it in a tad but let’s be honest it’s rare to make it at any level of elite sport without a fair chunk of self belief. Not digging on the bloke but it’s a better starting point than say McSweeney who ‘appeared’ to lack any form of confidence to play at test level.
Good to see him sitting there next to Pat Cummins. I’m sure being around these blokes is going to increase his development at a rapid rate.

Big half an hour with Bumrah off the field. Could make or break the game this next period.

AB was quite diplomatic about it earlier and said something similar … good to be confident but he’s edged over that line and would benefit from some mentoring.
