With Cox knocking back the coasters deal, did he see this coming?
Was it the plan that no premiership Longmire would step aside?
I just find it a little odd.

As a life long swans fan. I am genuinely sad horse has stood down. Can't believe I have sad feelings about this. Since 92 when I jumped on board it's basically been roos and horse. Yes made was there too. But he's rubbish. Horse was amazing. I love roos for his defensive style and pressure. But horse added more. He deserved atleast 2 more flags. His players let him down. Maybe that was the final nail.

Genuinely sad

No doubt there would have been discussions on a succession between Horse and Cox. Horse said himself he was toying with the idea of quitting during the season last year. Nothing odd about it...Cox saw the writing on the wall and chose to wait Horse out and it came quicker than expected.

People trying to make stuff out of nothing

14 years coaching, his time was closer to the end than beginning. I’d rather coach Sydney than the Eagles anytime over the next 5 years

Plus Horse stated that he was open with the club that it would be his last contract, so Cox would have known that he was a big chance to take over in 2026.

Proper succession planning, who’d have thunk?
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Not sure Longmire hanging around is the greatest outcome though.
Has a succession plan ever worked?
Think Buckley/Malthouse and then Clarko/Mitchell of late that didn’t work(or have time too)

If a flag is the marker then the Roos > Goodwin scenario has to be considered successful (my personal thoughts on Goodwin aside)…

Malthouse to Buckley only missed a flag because of a Dom Sheed kick, that was a success.

Be an interesting watch back in 3-4 years time.

Port lost Houston for Berry and Whitlock.

I believe we had Berry rated at #10, got him at #15. We had Whitlock around #15 and got him with pick #33 and he was widely regarded as a real slider.

The ranking system is irrelevant if the player is available at the time but doesn't suit a clubs needs so they drop down the order.

For Port, the real story will be if you struggle again in finals because you are lacking a running half back who tops the metres gained column and relying on the younger less experienced players.

Every year or so Port seem to trade away a star (no fault of your own, they ask to leave mostly) for top draft picks, but to win the flag I think you need to be more stubborn and hold onto them rather than losing them for rookies who will take time.

Take Houston for example, if you kept him, probably a much bigger chance to play in a GF in 2025 than having Berry and Whitlock. Do you hold him to his contract, potentially win a flag in 2025 and then trade him for less value on the trade, but the value of winning a flag trumps all?

Tough gig being a list manager.

Who have Port lost apart from Houston that could be considered a star?

Duursma
Amon
Wingard
Ladhams
Howard
Ryder
Polec

If anything I think Ports issue is more trading in players than trading out players

As I've said previously you have to go back to Burgoyne to find one that has become a better player after leaving us.

We most certainly got the most out of Wingard, Ladhams, Howard, Ryder and Polec. Duursma is TBC and Amon has remained a useful player.

We can't be accused of sitting on our hands, that's for sure.
