Nothing will bring Charlie Stevens back, but this is inadequate for a person who hit a pedestrian and left them to die. :(

The young man who hit and killed the Police Commissioner’s son during schoolies celebrations in Goolwa last year has been spared jail.

Dhirren Randhawa, now 19, was silent in the dock of the South Australian District Court on Tuesday as Judge Joanne Tracey sentenced him for killing Charlie Stevens in September last year.

She said Randhawa, who fled the scene after striking Charlie, had done so out of panic, shock and disbelief.

Judge Tracey sentenced him to one year, one month and seven days in prison, taking into account a 25 per cent discount for his guilty pleas.

However, she said given his remorse, lack of prior history and circumstances of the collision, good reason existed to suspend that sentence upon him entering into a $1000 good behaviour bond.

He has been disqualified from driving for ten years.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Unfortunately, this is the standard sentencing procedure for such offences that defence counsel have manage to get their clients.

Precedence in the law takes a long time to catch up to societal standards.

The Stevens family would not be the first to experience the justice in similar incidents

Talk about being flogged with a wet lettuce leaf, that is manifestly inadequate.

Hope the DPP appeals.

I think there's much more to this than people know about,
Something tells me that it wasn't as simple as the bloke turning around & driving back & running him over,
it does say "circumstances of the collision."
MAYBE he was abused, turned around & drove back towards him slightly & Charlie MAYBE jumped out into the line of the vehicle slightly, which MIGHT have contributed to the accident,
MAYBE.

Far worse was the truck driver on South Road, out the front of Castle Plaza, that ran down the chinese visitor & killed him,
he got left off too but no-one has jumped up & down about that incident.

It does, as he's given a guilty plea we won't ever hear the actual goings on that night but it's not unreasonable to think that the actions of two people may have contributed to this tragic event.

Charlie's friends know what happened but they're remaining very tight-lipped about it.

Like I always tell people, if you want to kill someone do it in a car.

Well there you go, there's always 2 sides to the story.
A similar thing happened to me back in January 2014,
I was involved in a 2 car crash, as the car that collided with me stopped, several blokes got out of the car & were acting aggressively, so I got out of my car & took off on foot up the road, about 400m away so as to avoid having the shiz kicked out of me, when the police drove past I waved them down,
I was charged with leaving the scene but it was deemed to be on the minor end of the offence.

Thanks for posting that, not sure what to say other than there are no winners in all of this, the lad has taken responsibility which is all you can ask, only hope that now that the proceedings are over the family can focus on the good times with Charlie.

The all but certain passing of my grandad in the next 48 hours.

Can take a fair bit of piece from knowing he will join nan, he was never really the same since Nan passed 6 years ago.

A hell of an interesting man....

Born in Sabina, Jamaica, both his parents were from Cuba. Grew up as a fair skinned Jamaican.

Eventually moved to the UK, ended up being a pilot in the British Air Force throughout the 1960's

Moved to Australia in roughly 1970.....

The man could tell a story and often still used patwa slang when talking which confused the hell out of my partner and my children. The man loved cricket and my greatest childhood memories were sitting with him as a child watching vhs' sent from family back in Jamaica of the West Indies home test series. Watching the likes of Vic Richards and my fav Brian Lara whilst eating the hottest vindaloo i could ever recall with bowls of yoghurt next to us.

Always an adventure with him, would randomly pick me up from my mums and saying we are going on a trip. Would often end up a suprise trip to AO to watch the test cricket or a day at the footy watching Centrals. Was very fortunate i got one holiday a year with him and that was always the most exciting time of the year. Trips back to Sabina and Melbourne for sport were great memories.

Absolutely encouraged my sport and would get out and watch nearly everything i did from footy, soccer, tennis, cricket, rugby.

Will be gone soon but the memories never will be thats for sure.

Stunning young Melbourne girls life lost in the methanol drink spiking event in Laos. I cannot imagine the heart break the family is going through.

19, back packing through Thailand with her best friend, living their best life, seeing the world and her life is taken from her for nothing more than greed.
