I’ve been so fortunate to see a lot of Australia and get paid to do so with my employment over the years. One of my Dull Men’s Club admissions is that every town I go through I take a 5 minute detour and check out the local footy ground. I’m a grassroots footy tragic and can appreciate the effort it takes at any level to get a game of footy organised for players and spectators to enjoy, also I’m intrigued to see the local grounds that all tell a story.

I know some other posters on here who are very similar.

A while ago I had a wedding in Mildura, so I killed the morning watching U17s & ressies, they have a great set-up there.

Was tempted to miss the wedding and watch the seniors but it's along walk home from there...

Got some decent set ups at all grounds up there. Reckon they played a preseason AFL game at Red Cliffs years back.

There are a lot of things my wife dislikes about me but detouring to check out a new country footy oval may be top of the list.

I'm sure you've been there before but you'll love coaching out @ Long Plains, best deck I've ever umpired/played on. Just gotta capitalise on the 19 goal breeze that presents itself, I've seen many kicks end up landing behind where the kicker kicked it from.

Some of my picks;

Cygnet (TAS) - Coldest joint in Australia in the middle of winter, fantastic venue.
[b]Queenstown (TAS)[/b] - Gravel surface, they all have a screw loose to play on that!
Lavington (NSW) - Undisputed best facility I’ve ever seen, shits on SANFL grounds.
Deniliquin Rams (NSW) - Biggest deck in Australia, has 2 full size cricket grounds within the perimeter.something like 35- 40 metres longer than the MCG!
Lancelin Ledge Point (WA) - built into a small cove and the entire Western wing is completely exposed to the harsh elements from the Indian Ocean. Gale force cross winds every game and I’d argue it’d be the hardest place to play anywhere in Australia.

I love old country pubs & in particular the old toilets,
something about standing at the urinal of the Dimboola pub whilst having a slash in the cool of an old dunny, whilst taking in the serenity of the country.
Don't judge me.

Got to agree, love going to all the grounds of a local town, if I don't know who plays there (esp cricket) I then get stuck googling the local association, how many teams they have, how successful they have been etc etc.

I have a memory of watching the footy at Robertstown when I was 5yo, last year I went up there and had a look around and it was incredible the emotions I had driving into there, 48 years later.

I also do the same with golf courses, the wife lets me do the footy ovals, but gets seriously pissed with golf courses, I think because I usually want to drive around the whole perimeter and we have nearly had a couple of accidents with my eyes not being on the road. At least with footy ovals she knows how long the drive around it will be

Even better was the pisser at a music festival I went to last year at Peter Lehmann,
4 blokes stand around what looks like a Dalek & piss into a small plastic trough, whilst facing each other.

Country Pubs - it would be rude not to.

But Its regional op shops for me.... the more local and obscure the better.

If I find myself with enough spare time whilst traveling through with work i'll choose my route based on which op shops are open.

Generally looking for footy stuff, but anything I consider a treasure will end up on the back seat.

Last week I noticed that the regulator hose on my BBQ was leaking, so no probs, easy fix, I’ll just get a replacement.

Upon starting my research to find the correct hose, I find out that that POL connectors for gas cylinders have been replaced by a new LCC27 connector.

What’s this new connector? It’s a RH thread connector rather than the existing POL LH thread … awesome, it nearly takes me more time to connect a gas bottle than to cook the BBQ, hooray!

But hang on, you can’t buy the POL connector gas bottles anymore, LCC27 became mandatory for new bottles in 2022. Shit, do I have to change my gas bottles as well? Being a tightarse, this isn’t something I wanted to contemplate. Gas bottle 1 has another year before it’s out of date, but bottle 2 has another 3 years.

Faark, do they even sell the now superseded POL regulator hoses now? Do I have to scrap the 2 gas bottles and buy new ones?

After more frantic research, I started to calm down. Yes, POL regulator hoses are still around. A POL connector hose fitting will work with a new LCC27 connector, but not the other way around.

Yessssss! So all I had to do was buy a new POL regulator hose (which is where I started the journey) and then can still use my current gas bottles, and when they go out of date, the new LCC27 bottles will still work!

So that’s what I did.

As an aside, the new LCC27 bottles have a failsafe mode whereby gas will not flow unless a proper hose is connected, even if the tap is open. Even better, the new RH thread and handle are 5 billion times easier to use and only require a small number of turns to engage.

Well, that’s enough excitement for today, I’m exhausted.
