Re: 2024 AFL Silly Season
You can’t blame the players, remember this is their job.
Yes, they are greatly rewarded with very large salaries, but in comparative terms to the rest of us, their max earning potential can be as low as a handful of years to 10+ years, whereas most of us have 40+ years, so they need to make hay while the sun shines.
Imagine not knowing where your next home will be … Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane? Whilst the length of contracts seem to be increasing, you are generally in what is considered a relatively short term contract with conditions that most of us don’t have. The recently enacted Right to Disconnect Laws don’t apply to these players, they are expected to be a role model for their club 24x7, with heavy restrictions on what ‘normal people’ can usually do.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not crying a river for them as they are extremely well compensated, but perhaps put the human aspect into perspective as they are real people with families.
The right, needs and future of the clubs and their players need to be balanced and managed, not an easy task and quite rightly can be extremely difficult, to expect players to manage this on their own with no-one assisting them against the might of clubs is perhaps unreasonable.
As in all walks of life, there are good and honest operators, ordinary ones and even the odd shonk or shark.
C’est la vie.

Re: 2024 AFL Silly Season
Im with Booney on this one.
Player managers should be on a flat fee not percentage of a contract.
Of course they are going to encourage movement cause it's more money in their pocket.
These long term contracts are raking in the coin for them.
The Grundy situation still irks me.
How much did his management team make on his Collingwood contract, then Melbourne and now Sydney?

Standard rate is 4%, pretty sure this is fixed. His contract didn't change (to my knowledge), just the Pies offloaded him and paid a portion of his wagetigerpie wrote:Im with Booney on this one.

Proves my point. If he wanted to stay, go back to his management and renegotiate a contract for less money or the time frame.dedja wrote:Except he didn’t want to leave Collingwood or Sydney, both were forced on him by those clubs.tigerpie wrote:…

There's no way his management is going to do that!

Why should he take less money when Colingwood couldn't manage their salary cap properly? Not his fault they had a clown in charge of the dollarstigerpie wrote:Proves my point. That's the angle his management would've taken.....why take a pay cut Brodie?....which gives us a pay cut also.
We'll send you to Melbourne (and get a cut) then Sydney (and get another cut).
Again, they should be on a flat rate regardless of contract amounts.

Re: 2024 AFL Silly Season
Any decent manager worth his salt will get the best deal for his client.
Any decent list manager worth his salt will pay the minimum to keep their player.
Whatever the figure in between is, so be it.
A manager would get 4% of his contract, there are no transfer fees involved in footy. If he gets additional contracts outside of footy, the manager can negotiate a bigger slice of the pie. But Grundy isn't really that sort of player, so not sure where you think the manager is getting extra dollars from...
Calling for flat rates just highlights that your previous list manager had zero idea and saw 2 reluctant players in Grundy and Treloar leave when they didn't want to.

So Brody gets a 7 million dollar deal (roughly) which $280000 goes to management.wenchbarwer wrote:Any decent manager worth his salt will get the best deal for his client.

Then he signs a new deal at Melbourne no idea of the duration, then signs at Sydney.
So his management get a slice of all 3 contracts up front?

Manager wouldn't get 3 bites of it. They just get whatever was negotiated originally

Exactly right, the contract transfers with the player. Manager only gets 4% per season, not upfrontPurple Warrior wrote:Isnt it the same contract? Re: 2024 AFL Silly Season
The contracts would have to be re-drawn up as it's a new team surely.
The Melbourne contract might have rolled over, not sure about the Sydney one?

Lukosious wants nearly a million a year for two years.
Pies knock that on the head!
Good player but priced himself out of our market.
Are the crows going to pay that?

I can't see the crows, or anyone for that matter, giving him a million a year.
3 year deal on $750k a year is about the mark.

That's what the last 2 years of his GC deal is worth, my guess is they're not willing to pay any of it for him to play elsewhere and he's not willing to lose any.tigerpie wrote: Lukosious wants nearly a million a year for two years.
