League v Seniors or As
Is it a SANFL thing only to describe the As as the "League" team?

Yeah it seems a weird unique SANFL thing. Even in amatuer/community level in SA its A grade and B Grade.Wedgie wrote:Is it a SANFL thing only to describe the As as the "League" team?

Maybe the term league came about as a 'higher' form of football. You went from playing country A Grade to going down to the city and trying your hand at league football.

Always found that was more a private school thing even including football. Play in the first 11 or the first team etc.Corona Man wrote:I find that more in cricket than football, but yes I agree, they do.Mr Beefy wrote:They also use 1s and 2s a bitCorona Man wrote:Yep. Re: League v Seniors or As
In WA, it is League.
It stems back from 1921, when the WAFL absorbed the WAFA and made it their reserves competition. The competitons were actually managed separately for a number of years and were referred to as the WAFL and WAFA.
The WAFL team was the one with the higher standing and it wasn't uncommon for a club's teams to be referred to as the League team and the Association team.
By WWII, what was now the WANFA became known as the seconds competition, with players regarded as 'league' or 'seconds' players.
The term 'league' is used by clubs state wide for their top team, not just in the WAFL.

Re: League v Seniors or As
It was initially based on the standard of competition. The VFL and VFA were regarded as the 'senior' level of football in Victoria, with the other levels of football being 'junior' in standard by comparison.Corona Man wrote:Yep. In time, the VFL and VFA clubs created reserves competitions with each club entering a team. The term 'reserves' was used because the players in these second XVIII's were the reserve players for the senior team.
