I don't think of either of them as dirty really. As a Norwood man, I think Pickett delivers probably the best bumps of any bloke who has played for a long, long, long time, and he gets about 1 in 15 of them wrong and then really cleans up blokes (when he hits them in the head, or they are over the ball). However, he crunches a hell of a lot of blokes body to body and they all feel it.

As for Antrobus, I reckon he started about 15 pct of the blues he was in, but got sprung 85 pct of the time trying to belt someone who has standing him to close for his liking, niggling him, whatever etc. Don't know if he had a hopelessly short fuse or not, that's for North men to tell me, but I never thought of him as dirty, just someone who was way too easily got in.

If we're talking dirty players, I'm afraid I have to go:
Alan Stringer - champion of managing to connect with blokes not looking at him and nothing worse than what he did in 84 quali v centrals that ended up getting Carey rubbed out (who was trying to swing at the Dogs' bloke chasing Stringer for his whack on someone) and probably cost the Bays a flag.
Grave Danger - again, did some horrible things to skinny blokes or guys not looking. Didn't spend a lot of time looking for John Wynne though.
Wayne Stringer - must have taught his little brother most of the stuff he knew.
Kym Klomp
The younger Riley (so different to his older brother John)

And, no, I certainly don't claim we were angels at the Parade.

Just as McIntosh didn't exactly go out of his way to give Greg Phillips one of his cheap shots either ;)

You're right about Pickett, i certainly dont consider him to be up there with the "dirtiest" types of players the league has seen in the last 25 years. Deserved the suspensions he got but i dont think hes in the Stringer, Granger, Salisbury or Klomp category.

More than happy to own up to my blokes. For one, Jim Michalanney seemed to have a knack of running into Brian Cunningham (a lot) while Neil Balme, when he came back as playing coach in '81, performed a manouevre on Stephen Kerley at Footy Park, who had gone to North by then, that even the WWE wouldn't have done. Kerley marked and then Balmey hit him once, twice, and then fell knees into him as Kerley was on the ground. We all knew at that point that it was time for Balmey to take up a permanent position in the little chair next to the dug out that he liked to sit on.

I still get angry, as a Norwood supporter, thinking how Roger Luders' career, confidence, leaping ability etc was all basically finished from the day he had his jaw horribly broken with a terrible cheap shot.

He may or may not have, who knows. The fact is he was playing with a lot of his mates, the Burgoynes etc, , plus he won the Norm Smith, so it may have been a fair assumption to think it was a highlight. He may enjoyed the Kangaroos one more but how would anyone know if they dont ask the question.

I thought it was interesting to hear Choppy say that hes only played 1 league game for Port magpies and that was in 03 [I think] when returning from a shoulder injury whilst at the Power.
He got drafted from Port U'19s and seconds in 96 so never played league.

I dont think hes dirty, more super hard and tough. Something North need.

Yes he got overlooked in 1996 for the Powers initial list of 52  and duely drafted by the Roos where he won a Rising Star, Premiership and involved in the team of the 90's

If he is still good enough to play in the AFL, which I think he is, he is more than good enough to play in the SANFL

Dont think he's good enough? You got 2 be kidding! He should dominate the local comp 4 the next 3yrs if mentally right.Just his intimidation & presence is enough 2 have opposing players take there eyes off the ball.If the Gowans can do it, this man will be twice as gd.

IN HINDSIGHT, plenty of good players get overlooked. From what i can recall Pickett wasn't a standout junior, he was playing Under 19's so thats a good indicator that he wasn't an absolute standout because most players rated extremely highly as a junior dont play under 19's, but go straight to Reserves or League footy.

I believe there could have been some other "issues" that may have resulted in him not being in Port's initial AFL squad as well.

Gratuitous smart ar&e comment to fill in time on a quiet day -- Russell Ebert came back from the VFL in 1980 and was quite good for a few years.
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.
