"Because of my knee problem, I didn't have the spring to jump into packs and mark the ball as I used to . . . not that it meant anything to Denis," Koutoufides said.
"At three-quarter time of what was my 200th game against St Kilda at the Dome, he said to me, 'Kouta, if you don't start jumping, you're better off retiring'.
"I was shattered. I couldn't sleep that night and there were more sleepless nights to follow, even though Denis rang the next day to apologise."
Koutoufides also blasted Pagan for his poor list management and was frustrated with Pagan's obsession with the pre-season competition.
"These days 22 rounds is hard enough but for us then it was more like 26," he said.
"Our season started from the beginning of the pre-season competition, while other teams eased their way in. Little wonder we couldn't sustain our form to the end."
