Ian Chappell Retires from Commentary

Postby whufc » Tue Aug 16, 2022 12:20 pm

A legend of the game will be leaving our airways.

The blokes is undisputedly a legend of Australian Cricket for both his on field and off field services.

Not overly sad to see him retiring though....the last five years he has just come across as grumpy old man who has fallen out of love with the modern game and using the airways to vent his 2-3 gripes for the entire summer.

He did whinge a bit towards the end but he was a straight shooter unlike the current day commentators who just stroke each other’s ego’s

100% agree with this, you and I have both brought it his consistent whinging about the modern game on here previously.

I believe he will still continue writing his regular column on Cricinfo which I have liked reading as he has written about and raised good points. I've found his articles to be quite informative unlike his opinions and gripes he has continually brought up on ABC radio in recent summers.

He does seem quite self aware though which I can respect, from the articles announcing his commentary-

When asked how he would like to be remembered as a commentator, Chappell replied: "It's up to other people to decide what they think of me and some will think I've been all right. Some will think I've been a pr**k. That doesn't bother me one bit."
