ALL 16 AFL clubs have met behind closed doors at Telstra Dome on Monday to kick start the annual exchange period.
Carlton is in the box seat to claim West Coast skipper Chris Judd after it was revealed that no third club was likely to be involved in the deal.
Adelaide looks set to emerge as a busy player in trade period, with Martin Mattner, Ben Hudson and John Meesen all likely to have new homes by the end of the week. Sydney seems certain to be Mattner's new home, with Hudson likely to be taken by the Western Bulldogs. Meesen looks set to join Melbourne.
The Bulldogs also appear poised to welcome Geelong's Tim Callan into their fold.
Earlier in the day, Darcy Daniher joined Essendon, Jaxson Barham became a Magpie and Adam Donohue became a Cat after they were claimed by their respective clubs via the father-son bidding system.
ADELAIDE
Recruiting manager Matt Rendell:
On Ben Hudson: "Hudson has said that he wants to go to the Western Bulldogs, and we're still negotiating. We want their pick 22 and they don't want to give it to us."
On John Meesen: "Once again, we want [Melbourne's] pick 21 so we're just negotiating that. I want their second round pick and they've offered their third."
BRISBANE LIONS
Coach Leigh Matthews:
"At the moment, there is nothing that's going to advantage us that we know of and that's what the trade period is all about. If there is something that transpires that makes us think: 'Well, we've got to bite the bullet' and sometimes you do. [We're looking for] someone that makes our team better."
On Cameron Wood: "The fact is he's a contracted player. The trade period is about if someone offers you something that's better than what you think [Wood] is to us … but he's a valuable player for us. But if something transpires … or if it doesn't transpire, then he'll be at the Lions next year."
CARLTON
Chief executive Greg Swann:
On Chris Judd: "We had a good discussion with West Coast, nothing has been resolved and we're hopeful that there's a couple of things that will be taken back. Obviously, John Worsfold and Trevor Nisbett weren't here, they were at Chris Mainwaring's funeral, so there's a few things to go back and forward. We had good discussions. We've put up a few different options, people will go away and we'll all think about some of those various options. We're not going to go into it here, but hopefully we'll get a resolution."
COLLINGWOOD
Chief of football operations Geoff Walsh:
"We've got nothing to say. Nothing happened today with us and it was pretty quiet."
ESSENDON
Coach Matthew Knights: "There are no updates for us and very little has happened – it's been quiet from our perspective. We're keen to have our draft picks and take them and that's what we'll be doing in the national draft."
On Darcy Daniher: "We're obviously rapt to get him [Darcy Daniher]. He's a fine young man and he a fine young footballer. The Daniher name in synonymous with Essendon, so it's just a fantastic result. We would've taken him at [selection number] 23 if that had have been the case, but we're pleased to get him through at 39. It just goes to show that he's held in high regards by the Kangaroos at the second round and that's a good thing and a compliment for Darcy."
FREMANTLE
Coach Mark Harvey: "There's just a lot of prelim talks at the moment. We're obviously keen to keep our early picks, particularly our first round and second round [picks], and that's what we'll be keeping. So nothing else – just a lot of talk about players from other clubs really. Not too much has happened today, but I'm sure as the week progresses with the [Chris] Judd stuff, it'll get interesting. We've got nothing to do with that, so we'll wait and see what happens."
GEELONG
General manager football operations Neil Balme:
On Steven King and Mark Blake: "I honestly couldn't tell you [if they will remain at the club next year]. I don't want to talk about it. There's a lot to be done, it's a very interesting situation and obviously they're very important players to us, both of them, so we'll talk it through."
On Adam Donohue: "It's very exciting. We're not really surprised [no bid was made for him] because most clubs respect the fact that father-son is about father-son, unless it's an anomaly, like the No.1 pick. I think most clubs would be happy for the boys to go to the clubs their fathers played at."
HAWTHORN
General manager player personnel and strategy Chris Pelchen:
"We certainly haven't changed our policy. We're still working to a strategic plan that was written in 2005 and to suggest that we are going to top-up [with older players] would be incorrect. For us it was fairly quiet day, but it is early in the week, so we're certainly open-minded about doing some trading before the end of the week."
On Tim Boyle and Jarryd Roughead: "At this time of the year, obviously a lot of things get speculated about and in Tim's [Boyle] case as well as [Jarryd] Roughead, clubs brought their names up – but we certainly won't be trading them at this stage."

General manager recruiting and list manager Craig Cameron:
On Travis Johnstone: "Nothing has happened with Travis today. There hasn't been a lot [of interest in him]. There hasn't been many offers. It's a strange week, trade week. We don't use our players as bait but Travis' name is out there."
On Brad Miller: "There's been a little bit of interest from Sydney. We'd like to keep Brad, so that's where we're at. It would have to be [a good offer].
On Crows ruckman John Meesen: "I think by the end of the week [a trade] should happen. At this stage, we haven't gone too far with it. It will probably be draft picks, but it's only Monday and by the time we get to Friday, or even by Wednesday, we'll have a better idea. I wouldn't have thought [we would trade] a second round [pick]."
PORT ADELAIDE
General manager football operations Peter Rohde:
"We haven't got too far today."
On Damon White: "We're very happy to keep him [White] on our list and we're happy with where our group is. We haven't got too far with them [the Western Bulldogs] at all. We're happy to wait and see. I'm betting at the end of the week he'll still be on our list."

"We hope to be [active this week], yes. We'll be in the hunt and see what's around today."
On Cats ruckman Mark Blake: "We haven't spoken to [Blake's manager] Anthony McConville as yet, but we certainly will chase that up. [Blake] is certainly something we'll chase up.

General manager football development Tony Elshaug:
"It's a day to get a bit of an understanding about the requirements of each club. I think it's basically a lot of housekeeping and just making sure everyone is up to speed with who's on the list and who's off the list at this stage, what rookies have been promoted and what clubs are looking for."
On Lions ruckman Cameron Wood: "No [we won't be chasing him]. I think all the clubs are looking for ruckmen. I think if you've got one or two strong ruckmen at your club, you've got a better chance of being successful. That's been proven with [Brad] Ottens, [Brendon] Lade, [Steven] King and [Dean] Brogan. You need two strong ruckmen to win a premiership, so if you aren't looking down that road, you've got to have something else special going in your team. I think everyone is looking for that sort of player if they can, but they might not be there."
On Steven King: "If someone mentions his name and talks to us about him, we'll take it on board and go back and have a talk about it. [We're not worried about King's age as] we took Matthew Clarke last year at 34 years old."
SYDNEY
Coach Paul Roos:
On Martin Mattner: "We're pretty pleased to have him on board. We've been doing a little bit with Marty and the Crows have been really good to deal with, and we've been pretty keen to pursue it with him. We pushed it pretty hard with Marty and he agreed to come to us this morning, so it's just a matter of trying to get things finalised. It hasn't absolutely got over the line, but it's pretty well a done deal."

Recruiting manager Scott Clayton: "We had a lot of talks about a lot of players and we'll see where it goes. We're still in play on most things, so there's nothing to report as yet."
On Crows ruckman Ben Hudson: "We're very hopeful of getting [Ben] Hudson done in the next little bit, so that's the priority at the minute. We've got talks going at the moment, so hopefully that'll be done soon. It's just tied up at the moment, so it's a bit premature to speculate on exactly what. We had very fruitful talks with Adelaide, so I'm pretty sure it'll be done in the next little bit."
On Sam Power: "Not sure about Sam at the moment. We're talking to him and see where that goes."
