The June 2nd Draft
The dreaded Mid-Season Draft. An opportunity, if they want to, for Port and Adelaide to pick off the best player from another SANFL team and use as their own. Or the lesser of two evils, your best players get taken off to another state to try their luck at the big time.
Of course, this is the age we live in and good luck to the players who do get picked up in the Mid-Season Draft and hopefully it is worth their while and they get a longer term list spot. It is, after all, the carrot that keeps many of the players playing to the high level that is SANFL football, for that chance to make it to, or back to, the AFL.
Selections are below. How many will be SANFL players and how will that effect the finals push for the teams that do lose one or more quality players.
Adelaide: 1 selection
Brisbane: 1 selection
Carlton: 3 selections
Collingwood: 2 selections
Essendon: 2 selections
Fremantle: 0 selections
Geelong: 0 selections
Gold Coast: 2 selections
GWS: 1 selection
Hawthorn: 2 selections
Melbourne: 2 selections
North Melbourne: 2 selections
Port Adelaide: 1 selection
Richmond: 1 selection
St Kilda: 1 selection
Sydney: 1 selection
West Coast: 2 selections
Western Bulldogs: 0 selections
Just for fun, lets pretend our own club is given the opportunity to draft from another SANFL club to bolster theirs. With one fell swoop, you can not only strengthen your own team, but weaken the opposition. Who are you choosing?
For the Eagles, I'm considering weakening Glenelg, South or Port - the main premiership contenders at this stage of the season. I'm thinking maybe Bryce Gibbs, maybe Cameron Sutcliffe, maybe Luke Partington? Or maybe one of the three State Forwards Glenelg have who are causing havoc every weekend?
What a luxury. I'm sure Port will still find something to whinge about.

Summerton retired in 2018 mate!
I'd get Broadbent or McBean, next choice after those two, a ruckman.

Re: The June 2nd Draft
AFL.com.au report Knoll has “failed” his medical so has slipped as an MSD draft pick
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Re: The June 2nd Draft
Players that nominated for the draft had to specify the minimum length contract they would accept - 6-month or 18-month.
Whilst most specify 6-months, according to the AFL website, Riley Knight chose 18-months. I'm wondering if this might scare off some clubs that are thinking they can just draft someone for the remainder of 2021 with no risk if it doesn't work out.
From Riley's perspective I can understand his decision ... if you choose 6-months then you'll possibly be replacing someone on the long term injury list with little chance of being kept on past the end of the year. Would you want to quit your current job and potentially move your life interstate for 4 months?

Stengel has been great for us but Sheedy never entered this season expecting he would be part of our plans. It was a last minute thing. He will revert to the plan he had in mind in January before Stengel was ever being talked about on our list.
Knight will be the biggest loss.
Can't see Hayes getting drafted.

Knight will probably end up at Port.
We will lose Callow and now that Knoll’s knee is worse than first thought I doubt we lose him.

Re: The June 2nd Draft
With the VFL on hold indefinitely, wonder if this would dissuade some - particularly those prepared initially to take a 6 month gig - from making the move?

You make a good point. Could some drafted players end up not getting a game anywhere if the VFL is canned.

85 nominations from the 8 clubs plus two from Adelaide and 1 from Port.
As interesting is those that did not nominate. Sutcliffe springs to mind.

He'd be getting paid too much at Port.

Re: The June 2nd Draft
Reading the continual updates over the last week on Fox Sports, Herald Sun, The Age & even the AFL website, the only players being mostly mentioned from the SANFL are Stengel & Callow. They may be it.

I just wonder if clubs will hold back, perhaps stick to players within their state, with the uncertainty of hubs etc.

Suns very keen on Ash Johnson and I’d be surprised if Knight didn’t get picked upSpargo wrote:Reading the continual updates over the last week on Fox Sports, Herald Sun, The Age & even the AFL website, the only players being mostly mentioned from the SANFL are Stengel & Callow. They may be it.

Re: The June 2nd Draft
With whats going on in Melbourne atm surely you could push this back a week or two at least until there is some clear air on what they are dealing with. Asking guys to move to Melbourne at the moment seems a bit off to me.
