Has there been any talk of an AFL hubs again due to recent Covid cases in the eastern states? Might impact the number of teams in our comp again this year.

I can but dream (not wishing actual covid on anyone, just the potential fear of it). A "nice" balanced season of 2 x 7 games without AFL influence, shorter if it must be, has great appeal to me.

Why has the SANFL not sought damages from both the AFL teams for breaking their contract?

Because too many of them use their positions as a pathway to better paying AFL positions.

The Football Commission is guilty by stealth of not doing anything as well. I guess that's what you get with Rob Kerrin. Only there for the drinks.

...and were one of the clubs that opposed the change from U17/U19 to U18...

...and openly and clearly opposed the league being used for Crows / Power "curtain raisers" FWIW...

...and (sort of relevant) one of the clubs that opted out of that short lived, half-arsed interstate tournament...

...and a senior coach going on the record about his views on the state of the game as it related to the competition he loved ('shouting at clouds', as I seem to recall some dick-head on here recently put it)...

Just thinking.... I wonder how the new proposed second tier comp comprising the AFL Reserves/VFL/Neafl teams, is shaping up for 2021...??

Well if the NSW and QLD teams are stuck for a game we should let them into our league. Possibly too many teams but the 8 SANFL could amalgamate like during WW2 to help them.

NORWOOD has appointed Rob Harding as its new Football Services Manager.

Harding joins the Redlegs after working in the AFL for the last 13 years, most recently at the Essendon Football Club.

Alongside Jade Rawlings, Harding will also play a key role as Senior Assistant Coach and Reserves Coach in 2021.

In 2020 Harding was appointed midfield Coach of the Under 18 Vic Metro Team, before Covid shutdown football in Victoria.

After working for the Crows for five years, Harding said he understands the place Norwood has in the community and is looking forward to working alongside both CEO James Fantasia and Head Coach Jade Rawlings.

“Having lived in Adelaide for five years when I worked for the Crows, I understand the place Norwood has inside the South Australian Football Community,” said Harding.

“The club’s history and passion of the supporters really appealed to me, as well as the opportunity to work with James Fantasia and Jade Rawlings.

“I also wanted to be part of an elite program at this level to help bring back some success to the Norwood Football Club.”

Harding says Norwood will look to implement a game style which stands up in finals and is based on contested ball and team defence.

“It’s really important we a play brand of football that holds up in finals,” Harding said.

“This is something Jade and I are completely aligned about, we both believe in having a strong contested and defensive base, and then playing some exciting offensive footy on the back of that.”

Harding went onto the mention that the role itself really appealed to him and will allow him to use several skill sets gained throughout the 13 years at AFL level.

“It’s a varied role which really appeals to me,” said Harding.

“It allows me to use a number of skills which I think can be beneficial to the football club.

“I’ll coach the Reserves and be a Senior Assistant to Jade in the League team and at the same time, I will be Football Services Manager, meaning I will be across the Football Operations and work closely with Rick Shrowder who will look after Talent Pathway and our SANFLW operations.

“Overall, I’m thrilled to be at Norwood and look forward to the season ahead.”

If the AFL season goes ahead without much fuss the two Adelaide clubs have a real advantage as the new VFL doesn’t start to a month after the AFL and they only are allowed 1 practice game at this stage. Port and the Crows reserves would have up to 3 practice games and start the regular season 2 weeks ahead of the VFL

SANFL players kicking the ball into play after a behind will be afforded more space under a rule change ratified by the South Australian Football Commission.

Aligning with the AFL introducing the same Laws of the Game adjustment for this season, SANFL will now instruct its players to stand at least 15m from the centre of the kick-in line or the behind post, after an out-of-bounds penalty.

Increasing the protected area from 10m to 15m is expected to continue to assist with the flow of the game whilst reducing congestion.

”We’re hopeful the increase in the protected zone to 15m will spread the field after a behind and, therefore, promote greater ball movement,” SANFL General Manager Football Matt Duldig said.

”Ideally it will also reduce the amount of short kicks into the back pocket which have become common with the protected zone being at 10m.”

The new rule change will be implemented across all State League competitions in 2021, including the Statewide Super Women’s League and U18s and 16s Torrens University Cup.

It comes ahead of the fixture releases for the SANFL Statewide Super League and Statewide Super Women’s League later this week.

SANFL’s Laws of the Game Committee noted the AFL’s rule change to penalise movement by the player on the mark but has opted not to introduce this with a view to reviewing its implementation in 2022.

Duldig said the decision not to adopt the player on the mark adjustment in 2021 was based on the timing of the decision, including a limited amount of time to educate players, coaches and umpires.

The third rule change implemented by the AFL for season 2021 was to reduce interchange rotations to 75 per match. This move aligns with the existing SANFL rotation cap.

All other Laws of the Game adopted by SANFL for season 2020 will remain in 2021.

Chaired by SA Football Commissioner Tom Zorich, the SANFL Laws of the Game Committee includes Duldig, North Adelaide chief executive Greg Edwards, Woodville-West Torrens premiership coach Jade Sheedy, Magarey Medallist Joel Cross, SANFL Football Operations Manager Sean Toohey, SANFL Umpiring Manager Shane Harris and SANFL Talent Manager Brenton Phillips.
