FIVEaa’s Stephen Rowe is calling for the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide to be left out of the SANFL 2021 season in what he says will be “another COVID affected year”.
Rowey told FIVEaa Breakfast’s David & Will on Wednesday:

“The SANFL have all but halved their salary cap to $210,000 from $400,000 due to COVID… SANFL earnings are down 45%, AFL grants have been cut by 30%. Clubs and the SANFL simply can’t afford it… the ramifications on this I reckon are going to be far reaching. What players are they going to lose… and what will the standard be? I’m really worried… you’ve got to be able to keep and retain players and you’ve got to remunerate them.

“Here’s the thing: I wouldn’t have the Crows and Port in the SANFL next year. Port and Crows players should go back to a SANFL club like they used to. The top up players they’ll be able to attract and the fact they’ve got AFL standard players fulltime… they’ll flog the SANFL teams. Crows and Port will be on top by the length of the straight.

“And here’s the other thing: I’ve heard the Crows are refusing to pay the $400,000 license fee to join the SANFL and in some respects fair enough. Port don’t pay one because they’ve given up their game development grant. So what do they add to the competition? If they don’t pay, what do they add? They certainly don’t add fairness, so you know what, go back to your SANFL clubs… for one year it’s the better of the two evils.”

Your correct but some serious cuts to SANFL clubs there. The AFL cutting grants but taking players for nothing. The AFL refusing $400k payment. PA development grant, what's that worth? The SANFL clubs getting screwed over. I wonder if the clubs will vote for inclusion now.

The reduced salary cap is ridiculous.
Everyone understands the financial position the league and the clubs are in but to cut it that much makes no sense.

So here we go. Olsen in charge of the sanfl spuiking the involvement of the afl teams kept saying it is a signed contract and we cannot change a contract and it stays til 2028. Now as the head of the crows board it is a different story. We the crows cannot afford to pay the contracted amount that we have to pay to the sanfl clubs so we will change the contract. sorry olsen you afl puppet but a contract is a contract and if you cannot afford to pay the contracted amount you just dont get to play in OUR league > GET IT

Will the clubs stick to the same time commitments or will there be a drop off in requirements? If training/fitness standards drop how does this help to compete against AFL listed professionals? A real concern that the gap is going to get a lot wider.
Rowey alluded to two clubs he is close to (Eagles & Norwood) seeing a number of players wanting to explore their options. By this he means I take it numerous players are at least weighing up whether it is all worth it.

If the AFL dropped the 2 lowest paid players off each list, that would save about $3m and the state league’s could maintain their very modest salary caps. Or, heaven forbid, the top paid players could empty their pockets of some loose change.

It seems the SANFL league competition gets whacked constantly from all angles.

Not counting finals, a salary cap of $210,000 is an average of $530 per game for only the 22 league players that play.

That is a disgrace, given the commitments outside of game day required.

In cricket, it took the Players Association to see the need for some money to go back to those that participate in the next level below professionals. The same couldn’t be said for the AFL Players Association or the AFL itself. Despite Covid, they are still selfish and money hungry with no vision beyond the top level.

The SANFL administration NEVER stand up for the league competition. They are all just in it for a job or payday for themselves. Some may see it as a stepping stone to a higher off field position in football.

VFL Dons to compete in east coast second-tier comp
The AFL confirms there will be 22 licences in the new-look east coast second-tier competition.

Essendon VFL will be one of 22 teams competing in a combined VFL and east coast second-tier competition in 2021, with clubs to be based in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.

The largest second-tier football competition in Australia is set to begin in April next year and will consist of a 16-round season, providing all players with a premium standard of football.

Confirmed licences:

Standalone second-tier clubs : Aspley, Coburg, Frankston, Northern Bullants, Port Melbourne, Southport, Werribee, Williamstown
Standalone AFL clubs: Brisbane Lions, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Footscray, Geelong Cats, Gold Coast SUNS, GWS GIANTS, North Melbourne, Richmond, Sydney Swans
Aligned clubs: Sandringham, Box Hill Hawks, Casey Demons

The VFL and east coast second-tier competition will integrate into a streamlined calendar for men’s football with the 2021 NAB League Boys, with both seasons set to begin in April, running concurrently with the 2021 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

All clubs will have connections to community clubs and pathway programs, including a varied alignment to Under-19 NAB League clubs for Victorian-based teams.

The name of the competition will be announced in the coming weeks with the competition to maintain a strong connection to the heritage of the respective Hard Yakka / Totally workwear VFL and Toyota NEAFL competitions and the communities who support them.

The VFL and east coast second-tier competition will sit alongside the SANFL and the WAFL in 2021 to provide players with the highest level of second-tier football. The AFL will continue to work with all AFL clubs on their non-selected AFL players ahead of their respective 2021 seasons.

The AFL will continue to work closely with AFL NSW/ACT and AFL Queensland to ensure the continued development and progression of premier men’s and women’s competitions in the State and Territory.

The salary cap is set at $200,000 for standalone clubs and $100,000 for AFL and aligned clubs. As previously communicated, there will be no licence fee payable by any club to participate in the 2021 second-tier competition with the AFL to subsidise all approved club travel for interstate matches.

A date for commencement of pre-season training ahead of the 2021 season will be advised in due course.

The AFL will continue to review all arrangements including return-to-train and return-to-play protocols in consultation with clubs, the various State Governments and respective Health Officers to ensure the health and safety of everyone involved in this competition remains the priority.

I've always been puzzled why we have a SANFL Football Commission. This seems to be a group one (or more) steps removed from the clubs. People on this group seem to be more interested in the "politics" of the job, and not so much in the 8 clubs of the competition. Didn't we have, in the good ole days, the collective of club presidents as the guiding body? At least these people were elected by their respective club members.
