Even a half fitr Judd may have just, may have, made a difference. Great game IMHO for the Catters to have leading into a G/F, needed a hard fought contest

Great Article in the Herald Sun

THE frenzied chase for Chris Judd has sparked fears from player managers and recruiting staff that the race for his services will stifle a host of potential trades.

Despite an AFL working party considering several solutions to free up player movement, the circus over Judd's availability is likely to again hamper many trades.

Clubs fear the confusion over where the star ends up is likely to drag on until the last day of the trade period, with clubs offering last-minute deals for the Eagle or involved in trades for the draft picks used to secure him. That will mean players desperate to move clubs will once more be forced to stay on, just as in recent years.

Last year, just nine players swapped clubs in a trade period labelled a farce by Sydney coach Paul Roos, after Hawthorn stonewalled the Swans' offer for Peter Everitt for three days before caving in two minutes before the deadline.

"(The Judd deal) doesn't need to come down to the last day of the trade period," one leading coach said. "But if it did, what you will find is so many other deals won't go through.

"There are four or five clubs in the running for him, and those clubs can't do anything until they know if they have him or not."

Leading player manager Ricky Nixon yesterday estimated as many as 20 deals fell through last year because the complicated trades over Everitt, Chris Tarrant and Jason Akermanis took so long to complete.

"He should nominate quickly where his preferred option is. Otherwise he is going to hold up a lot of other deals," Nixon said.

Nixon suggested that the trading deadline for a player with 100 games or 10 years' service be brought forward three days.

"That allows three days for the rest of the trades to happen," he said.

I like that idea. It seems to make sense as it would split the trading and allow the minor trades to be done once everyone knew where they were about the "stars".

Couple quotes from the Judd saga

Firstly from Ricky Nixon

If the Chris Judd one (stalls other trades), I reckon we're going to be for the first time looking at some major legal action from a restraint of trade point of view. If I have players who miss out on being traded … then I'll be going down that track this year."

AFL boss Andrew Demetriou yesterday warned clubs chasing Judd not to cheat on the salary cap with side agreements.

"All clubs know they're on notice, that if they try to construct something which is over and above what … the AFL will accept, then the AFL will come down hard on them," he said on SEN.

Demetriou singled out Carlton after the Blues' president Richard Pratt hosted Judd at his Raheen mansion in Kew on Thursday.

"Carlton knows too well, and they know that from history, that those things won't be tolerated," Demetriou said. "I don't expect that's what Carlton would be doing, they're very sensible now."

Demetriou can go get F##KED for singling out Carlton. Why would the bloke supposedly trying to tun the game single out a side with stupid comments like these...

Thats gold, coming from a guy who previously captained a club which has Kerr, Cousins and had Gardiner in their squad....

don't the Pies have problems in that area

I believe the entire Judd saga has been handled poorly from his Management

the club criteria is inconsistent, for me, it's not about returning home, playing finals or premierships, it's all about

Show me the Money

If it was about Premierships, Judd would be talking to the Hawks, maybe the Saints, WB and Kanga's, as all these clubs are in a better position than Carlton, Melb and Essendon

Its about draft picks and players, not $$$

Unless the hawks/wb/kangas trade for a top 5 pick then they arent in contention

Incorrect the Doggies have pick 5. Then either would Collingwood nor Essendon. Only 4 clubs have a top 5 pick...
Richmond, Carlton, Melbourne & Western Bulldogs...

Judd's not talking to clubs about draft picks, he couldn't care less, either way he just wants to see the deal get done to the club of his preference

with the Pies having pick 14 as their first selection, this will not satisfy the Eagles, they need to trade in to the top 10....... now thinking about it, I can't see how the Pies can snare Judd

You could be right there, i think they'd have to trade 2 quality players such as Thomas/Pendlebury and Didak, given that they dont have a top 10 pick. They'll over Toovey and/or Leon Davis and the Eagles will say no thanks and probably end up doing business with Carlton, or maybe Melbourne who may be prepared to release some of their quality youngsters.

i think the only way the pies would have a chance with Judd would be a 3-4 club trade so the pies got an early pick somewhere and offer a player too
