Phil Carman when he played well is perhaps the best footballer Ive seen for Norwood
Because of his immense talent it was most probably inevitable that Phil Carman would eventually play in the VFL
I have not heard or read he left because of a Oatey loyalty or a Hammond thing
Phil Carman did have a season under Bob Hammond , he probably could have left Norwood in 1973 , but stayed to play in 1974
Phil Carman played his last game for Norwood in the first semi final against GL
GL 12-18
NW 10-7
If memory serves me correct Phil Carman played below his best and was well held by GL defender Greg Croser a good looking footballer on and off the field
My thoughts were had Phil Carman played one of his brilliant games NW may have won the game
He ended up at CO the following year , one can draw conclusions as to whether the team loss was a catalyst to leave NW
In recent times I have spoken to a ST club stalwart from the Jack Oatey days
He has told a group of us that he considered Phil Carman as good a coach as Jack Oatey
He based his opinion on what Phil Carman had to endure at the start of his coaching career with a ST
He stated that Phil turned the club around from a struggling club to very very competitive club

When Robert Oatey was replaced by Bob Hammond, there was a definite angst at his appointment
Bob Hammond had a difficult task of blending in and also grooming a team for the reasonable successes the club had under Robert Oatey
Robert Oatey created a team , he may have even won Premierships, in my opinion
To Bob Hammonds credit, the wheels could have fallen off in his early tenure , but he took the club to successes in 1975 +1978
I was a Robert Oatey fan, he was the coach when I first barracked for the leggies
I was disappointed that he was replaced , but I had nothing against Bob Hammonds appointment
In 1974 when Bob Hammond was appointed I was still enraptured by his performance for NA in the 1973 Grand Final loss to Glenelg
Norwood had a new coach, and in my eyes a very very good defender as a player

Theres the yarn about when Bob Hammond talked to the Norwood masses for the first time
He was greeted with contempt by some
He made an initial remark " Members of the North Adelaide Football Club ..."
This brought a positive reaction
I have wondered whether Bob Hammond pre-mediated the North Adelaide jibe

When I think of Phil and the 2 Bobs !
I think of 3 magnificent footballers and 3 very good coaches in their diverse ways

The press ran stories on all of them
Some of them denied approaches, some confirmed
There prob were other possibilities , these are the ones I found

Mike swamp fox Patterson at the time had an imposing record as a coach , was a dual NA premiership coach in 1971-1972 and almost a 3rd after the 1973 epic loss to GL
It was interesting that he was sought after
From memory Swamp Fox was reasonably close to coaching NW ?
Had Mike Patterson taken the NW offer , I wonder if Bob Hammond might have coached NA ?

Tasmanias representative in discussions on Norwood, star forward Darrel Baldock , was in Adelaide last week.
He is reported to have had discussions with Norwood
When telephoned from Adelaide, Baldock said he had not visited Adelaide recently

The Doc was most prob a furphy
Baldock is also known as Mr Magic

Geoff played for WT/SA/WDV
For me also remembered as the Chief Executive at Norwood in the Basset and Warren era
Everyone I know , will most prob endorse about good a bloke Banger is , I certainly do
Ian' stazza' Stasinowski made Norwoods best players in this final , a man i consider iconic at the club

Leading goalkicker for SA was Wayne Slattery with 4 goals
Wayne started his career 2 years earlier as a 16 year old
Leading point scorer for SA was the brilliant Eddie Fry with 0-4

2 players who played in this Grand Final have recently past away
Glen 'black duck' Rosser who is mentioned to have participated well in this final, scored 1-1
John 'sneezer' Schneebichler, scored 2-1
Two excellent footballers

I was at this match, years later Im glad i was
NW were all over GL in the last quarter , frustratingly kicking too many points
NW hit the front very deep into the last quarter 13-17 to 14-8
Gl with one last attack kicked to the CHF position to a pack of players
One of the NW players in that pack was Norwood ruckman Michael 'doc' or the galloping hat rack' Gregg
Then I saw it
Graham ' studley' Cornes leaped on and above Gregg to take an amazing mark
Soon after the siren sounded
Graham Cornes kicked a goal to win the game for Glenelg
And to think I had intended going to the races that day
I almost didnt see one the SANFLS greatest marks ever taken , by one of my favorite Glenelg footballers

Jesus, 11.32 is absolutely shocking.

I guess they brought things back to equilibrium eighteen years later at Alberton when they kicked 19.2 against the Eagles.

I reckon it was one of the swirliest windiest grounds ive been to in Adelaide
Wind can affect the mindset of those shooting for goal

As a general rule
Into a breeze you would need to kick at goal with a lower trajectory for less deviation ?
With a breeze you could hoist it higher ?
With a cross breeze, many factors come into it , and can cause a greater probability of inaccuracy ?

Im my opinion, based on limited study :
In Melbourne it is easier to kick at goal under the roof at MArveL stadium compared to the MCG which is exposed to the wind

Maybe posters who were genuine full forwards, unlike me who was a fool forward , can give an opinion

I remember that final between Glg and Nwd at Footy Park when Glenelg had the wind for 3 quarters because the wind changed to the opposite direction after 1/4 time.

However, the 1977 Ardath Cup wasn't really a champions of Australia tournament, since the VFL didn't participate.
