A while back I contacted the doctor about this bursitis in my shoulder - last year I had a cortisone for it, but it has worn off and I wasn't keen on another, so he prescribed "anti inflammatory" tablets he said would help.

Few weeks have passed, hasn't improved.. was looking at my meds and it's called "ProCalm" - thought geez that's a weird name for an anti-inflame.. so I googled:

"Prochlorperazine, sold under the brand name Compazine among others, is a medication used to treat nausea, schizophrenia, migraines, and anxiety.It is a less preferred medication for anxiety."

Now i'm not a doctor, but this doesn't sound like it's gonna help my shoulder.

I don't tolerate the non-steroidal antinflammatory drugs well including Naprogesic and ibuprofen.
They all threaten me with gastric ulceration fast even in low dose.
Pethidine and other opioids tend to make me stop breathing.
I avoid cortico-steroids like the plague, due to their inherent risks.

Thankfully it is rare I have a pain paracetamol or aspirin can't settle.

I have - the last time I had a dental abscess I added topically applied whisky to my Paracetamol.

These days 1 Panamax and 1 low strength aspirin twice a day deal with the little bit of osteo-arthritis in my thumbs and right sacro-iliac joint that I've developed in the last few years. (100mg aspirin - e.g. Cartia can be used for pain as well as to reduce clotting risks by us slow metabolisers.)

Years ago I was prescribed Di-gesic for an injury and two days after stopping it I got classical opioid withdrawal synptoms. I've been extra careful ever since...

Mmmmmm Di-gesic. I loved them after having surgery back in the day. I still reckon one of the best over the counter pain medication is the good old Advil. Have three of those and they get rid of any tooth ache or headache in no time. Besides giving me the worst heartburn, they do the trick getting rid of pain.

Ha, I remember having a party at my mums house when I was about 19 and a big maori mate of mine asked if I had anything for his headache, I looked in the medical cabinet and there was only some di-gesic's so I said "Here, have a couple of these" He was grinning like a chesire cat for the rest of the night and tore up the dance floor.

I think they got rid of his headache.

1. Prochlorperazine has mild sedative actions, and is used to settle nausea and vomiting.
It is not used these days for treating Schizophrenia as there are many better choices - though none perfect.

2. I ceased bulk billing in 1987 when the Hawke governement changed the federal law to make doctors presumed guilty of fraud for Medicare billing errors, rather than intention having to be proven by the prosecution. I quit after one of my colleagues in Adelaide was found guilty - ironically he was a member of the ALP, had stood for a seat for the ALP, and had played football in the SANFL. (His receptionist had been fiddling the books and was caught later doing the same elsewhere.)

(I also quit all forms of private practice in 2010. I still do occasional interstate locum work in public health units on a salaried basis.)
