There are studies that suggest flattening the curve will see the mortality rate drop from 3% to 2.5%.
Assuming 60% of people catch it, that change from 3 to 2.5% will "save" in the order of 75,000 Australians. A substantial amount by anyone's count.

On the flip side, there are other studies that show unemployment increases the death rate by as much as 20%.
If you completely crash the economy and unemployment jumps 5%, out of a labour force of 15m, that's 750,000 extra unemployed, if 20% of them die as a result, that's 150,000.

I'm not sure you can say with certainty either set of numbers is correct. We've never seen CoronaVirus so can't say how beneficial flattening the curve will be, if 60% of people will catch it, etc. Similarly, the numbers around the increased risk of death from being unemployed, over what period, etc.
Therefore, you have to take the two 'results' with a grain of salt, but the takeaway should be you can't focus on one and completely ignore the other.

Flattening the curve is important, as is ensuring we don't send 100s of thousands of people into unemployment.

The economy was already trashed. We were on a trajectory toward a recession before COVID-19. Only Wayne Swan can save us now

Sweden just announced a $300 billion SEK (AU$50 billion) package. I think we need to up our game to bail out small business, laid off workers, casual sick pay etc.

Wouldn't it be nice if the banks put a freeze on all mortgage payments for small business and home owners for 6 weeks. That would be a nice stimulus package. Surely they could wear that and they'd still make a billion dollar profit.

They were talking about the government ordering companies to NOT take super payments out of our pays for a given period of time, given that it's just getting lost anyway, we may as well keep the extra 9% to help pay for mortgages and bills if we're forced to be isolated and can't work

Last year Singapore released a stimulus package, they had employers pay your super into your bank in line with your pay initially for 4 weeks and then they did another 4 weeks once they saw the positive outcome of the first 4.

If you have been directly effected by the Covid-19 with loss of hours, income in your business etc then contact your bank directly & they will work with you to assist with mortgage payments anyway possible I can guarantee that.

If they were to freeze all mortgage payments for 6 weeks for everyone Australia wide I'd imagine we would see plenty of redundancies & people being let go very quickly in financial institutions.

I was listening to an aviation expert a couple of days ago and they suggested that Virgin would only last about 3 weeks if they had to completely ground it's fleet - they still have bills to pay (planes aren't cheap, the average boeing is $175m to buy and the average airbus is about $300m) and they still have to pay to keep them parked.

Would be interesting to know how far QANTAS are behind them.

Qantas are only a couple of months behind them. Qantas has the advantage of owning all its fleet whereas Virgin leases a few of its aircraft but on the flip side Qantas relies on its International routes more than Virgin to make a profit.
Both will be gone without government intervention similar to most other airlines in the world. There is probably not 1 airline in the world that can survive without intervention

A lot of cruise liners and the airlines are only offering credits - okay, sounds fine but if all these guys go broke - there's NO cover under any travel insurance for bankruptcy of travel providers, travel agents and tour operators.

Yep. Not a huge issue given the amount we have already spent but in May our 1 year old turns 2 and in September our 11 year turns 12. If we end up going after September the cost to go is going to be thousands more given the 12 year old will be an adult ticket and the 1 year old will have to have her own seat as well.
