Re: Things that give you the sh1ts
So one of my workers who DIDN'T receive a redundancy on Thursday has decided to clean out his desk on Friday. Literally nothing left but the PC. All work in progress, prototypes, designs, books, files in the bin. Will be interesting to see if he comes back to work (due Tuesday). Even if he does, it's not going to be a good conversation for him as retirement might not even be an option for him now....

Small boundaries in u14 cricket, on a fast outfield every run is either 1 or a boundary, kids are not learning how to run/judge 2's & 3's, Id rather they make the boundaries too big than too small.

Update: Said employee has now submitted a sick leave cert for 2 weeks with aim to submit other certs until the end of the year - then go on 6 months LSL and force us to fire him after that. All because he didn't get a redundancy.

That's an ugly situation for everyone involved.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together.

Not a smart one either. the guy has about 1 year of S/L that would get paid out on retirement. He forfeits this now.

Excuse my ignorance, but if he submits legitimate sick certificates until the end of the year & then takes LSL after that (which I assume he’s entitled to), on what grounds would you be forced to fire him?

Yeah Im with Spargo, its not as if he has 'abandoned' his job.
Why does he get paid out on sick leave? Is that part of an arrangement in your workplace?

Re: Things that give you the sh1ts
Can I ask why he wasn't offered a redundancy? I would have thought he'd be a prime candidate to move on, I appreciate it would be a massive cost to the company but that's money he's entitled too either way.

Were the redundancies discussed on a case by case situation with each employee?

At a guess he would've cost the company a lot higher amount to make redundant given age and possible length of service to the company.

It wasn't voluntary it was forced on a skills and needs basis. I have a relatively young team that needs his experience. He is (from an age point of view) still a couple of years from retirement and I need(ed) his expertise to help the young Engineers.

Maybe he'll stall long enough for this.

I thought you said he would get paid out his sick leave if he retires?
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep
Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?
No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

He's already indicated his intention is to force us to sack him after his LSL period. I guess he's got until then to realise in his best interest to retire

I work with a guy like that, has 30 years experience and keeps all his knowledge in his head. Knows more than the engineers but trying to extract the information from his brain into work instructions is near impossible, making him an absolute asset. I'm trying to get into a role where I shadow him so I can become the crafty old **** they can't get rid of when he retires.
