Elimination Final or Wooden Spooner Play-Off

Postby csbowes » Sun Sep 16, 2007 9:41 pm

I knew by having that title some people would look in and say, "what's this fool on about?". But reading some of the posts in other areas, I have to wonder if those fans actually went to the game today.

I agree there was emotion and dedication in the Elimination Final, but any comments along the lines of it being a great game are surely way off the mark. Commentators on 5RPH (and 5AA) said it was a great game between Glenelg and Sturt.

What?

Where?

I sat there for 2 plus hours and watched an unbelievably deplorable Glenelg, with horrid hand and foot skills and poor decision making throw up was overall a shocking display of football, nudge out, by one point, Sturt, who at the same time, were just as bloody atrocious and funnily enough, maybe stiff to lose what could be the worst game of football I've ever seen. Surely Centrals are still on the floor laughing their a*** off at what might be coming their way?

I'm happy for other fans to come on and disagree with me here. I'd love to know whether I'm the lone voice. I sat with 3 Sturt fans amongst a plethora of Bays fans and the general consensus around me seemed to be that the game was terrible.

Close it was...

Entertaining... well frustrating is a better word for it... it was almost comical how bad the two sides were. I'd hate to have dished that up to West or South during the minor round, I reckon we'd get a flogging. No disrespect intended...

I just thought it was that bad.

Kudos to Glenelg by the way. To play that woeful for 3 quarters would normally drain any side of hope, but they hung in their, snatched a couple of lucky goals near the end and stole the win.

History shows that prior to today, Glenelg had won 5 of 7 Elimination Finals and gone on, on every occasion, to make the Grannie. Sure they lost every one, but still, maybe they'll make it again?

As for Feast missing that last shot, not good, but poor bugger. Saw him after the game, he was shattered, and I mean SHATTERED, but the loss isn't on him, the team was poor, it was a team loss.

It may have not been the highest of standard game but could that have been somewhat to do with the very blustery conditions? Was the Qualifying Final a much higher standard? North went goalless for 83 minutes at one point, and the Eagles did not score a goal in the last 45 minutes.

Can you really see Centrals not scoring for 45 or 83 minutes in the same circumstances? I can't see it myself...

Fair call, i think the wind had a lot to do with it and there was also a lot of pressure out there and maybe a bit of nerves form us, i think we did really play pretty poor football and where lucky to get away with the win and if we play like that next week we wont beat the eagles.

I'll disagree with ya, mate. Thought it was reasonable, given the conditions, apart from probably 15 minutes of the third quarter. Certainly seemed entertaining and emotional to me.

I reckon Sturt lost it in the third quarter by insisting on playing to the defensive side.

I sat in the stands (Edwin Smith) for the first time in years during the Elim. final.
Sturt, you have a few good fans that know footy, but geezuz you have some of the worst supporters I've ever heard at the footy. I started the day hoping Sturt would win as I think North match up better on them than the Bays, and I would rather see North play Sturt than the bays if needed during the finals, but after the shit I heard coming out of your supporters mouths for the 1st 2 1/2 quarters, I started praying for a Glenelg win, something I've never done before.
Sturt's biggest problem today, you were VERY undisciplined, it cost you heaps.

If the conditions were the same as today, I can see it's possible (and likeley) for any side to have long periods without scoring a goal.

IMO the first game was better than the second and is it just me or does that always seem to happen?

I admit both games were ordinary today. Way, way too many free kicks paid, so many OOF's (out on full), and ordinary skill levels. The wind though had a huge impact; it was so blustery out there today and it seemed to be blowing in all directions. Good luck getting a decent spectacle in those conditions. So all you ask for is a tough, physical, tight game and luckily we got 2. Luckily though because the skills for the most part were rubbish.

The last half of Glenelg/Sturt was great though, and the last quarter was an incredibly tight and tense 25 minutes.

Didn't see all of the game but the end looked quite decent. Some of the work around the packs was fantastic. Backwell and Douglas's in and under type work won the day in the end.

Yeah I walked out after the game and a Sturt supporter passed me whinging about the umpiring. In my head I was just thinking, you tosser, it wasn't the umpiring. Sure the game might have been over umpired and there were decisions that went against Sturt, which I thought were poor, but at the same time, we infringed on Glenelg players in the 50m arc of our backline and Glenelg didn't receive the frees they were probably due.

Its swings and roundabouts.

We were undisciplined at times, but overall I thought we lost the game due to poor disposal. The number of times we fumbled, kicked to opposition, handpassed to opposition etc, was appalling.

Glenelg did it too, but obviously, that doesn't mean my team has to reciprocate. As much as I hated losing the way we did in the end, I hope Glenelg go on and do something special.

They've been out of it for ages and its good to see them having a go in September again. They have a lot of fans and passion and God knows its better to have them there than bloody Norwood, who lets face it, no one likes! :-)

Rushby,

A dummy spit is when you just have a whinge about losing. I was commenting on how poor the game was, so you've missed the point. If you're happy for Glenelg to dish up that effort next week, then feel free to book a weekend away to Clare in week 3 of the finals, as you can listen to the Eagles take on whoever over the wireless.

If Sturt had won, I would of been joyous and relieved, but that doesn't stop one from making what one thinks is a fair assessment of the game afterwards. We were poor and would of been out the following week if we didn't improve dramatically. Both teams can play remarkably better than they did today.

Hey, I had a great day on my birthday, unlike 90% of the North fans I was barracking for the Bays and jumped around and hugged everyone after the Elimination Final and the at the end of the Qualifying Final I was jumping around and hugging everyone too!
I'm so hugable! :D

FWIW I agree with ya CSB. Looking at the game only on its merits as a game, it was pretty ordinary. Glenelg's first half skills were woeful. Sturt's endeavour was good but their discipline was poor, and to throw everything against a fumbling opponent for a half yet only be 2 goals up speaks volumes. The first three quarters were characterised by numbers at the ball-ups stifling the play, very unattractive to watch. The wildly swinging gale did not help, nor did the downpour in the first term.

The Bays looked good to me after half time, and the game finally opened up in the last term, but for my money that was a very ugly game.

Don't get me wrong, it was also a testament to the fighting spirit of both clubs and a character building win for the Bays - but three quarters ugly nonetheless.

I hope thats not wishfull thinking.

On the game i thought the skills of glenelg were completely way off the mark compared to sturt, i think the fact they got up was due to persistence, which was good and the umpiring wasnt great either.Sturts discipline was also terrible.Glenelg will have to bring alot more this week if they are going to beat the eagles.

I actually thought it was a great game, sure there were mistakes, but such was the intensity of the pressure both applied it's not surprising.

I was really impressed with the relentless intent of members of both teams to hit the body and fight for the contested ball ... Imho a game doesn't have to be high scoring to be interesting, I'd take body clashes over high scoring uncontested possession style everyday, and therefore thoroughly enjoyed the game!

Only downside was a Bays supporting mate giving away the result via text message half way through the final quarter on the ABC, but given the excitement surrounding the result I can forgive him for that!

I gave the result away to myself CP - was watching on TV, forgot it was live and hopped in the car to head down the hardware store. Turned on the radio and the player names were all sounding a little odd... Then they told me the bays had won by a point and I had effectively ruled myself out of the final 15 minutes when it actually got exciting.
