"REDLEGS EYE EX-ROO, FORMER PANTHER

An experienced AFL player and a former Power rookie look set to join Norwood this off-season.

Ex-North Melbourne and Brisbane midfielder Ryan Bastinac and South Adelaide speedster Emmanuel Irra are understood to be close to being confirmed as Redlegs signings.

Bastinac, 28, has played 164 games at the elite level but Norwood is waiting to see if he lands at another AFL club as a delisted free agent.He is friends with the Redlegs’ former Kangaroo Brad McKenzie and been on Norwood’s radar for a few years.

Irra, 25, spent two seasons on Port’s list before being cut at the end of last year and returning to South for this past campaign.

He played 14 matches for the Panthers in 2019.

Norwood has lost a swag of experience during the off-season following the SANFL retirements of Jace Bode, Alex Georgiou, Brady Dawe and Ed Smart."

Very few ins and massive outs. Some clubs have grabbed a few disenchanted players from other SANFL clubs but the comp gets weaker by the year. Do yourself a favour and scroll back over the past 3 years and see the decay we call the SANFL.

Not just country clubs although they make up a large percentage but the ammos get a few as well.

Also with Jack Trengrove going straight from an AFL list to an ammo club should probably raise a few eyebrows as well

This issue always come up every year.

IMO there is nothing new to this I can recall players leaving SANFL clubs for the Country and "Amateur"/Metro leagues in the 80s and 90s.

Players in their prime and at the end of the end of their league careers chasing $$$ and one night of training a week.

The reality is the SANFL is more of a commitment than it ever was, Three nights a week training, play and recovery session on the weekend 5/7 days

Not to mention training 3-4 nights a week from Mid Nov to March, pre-season, SANFL players spend every 2nd day of the year at their club.

Older players who've done it for 10 + years, Grigg, Pearce, Trengove, Lewis, etc get to the pint when footy becomes less of a priority and they want to go off play a less serious brand of footy and concentrate on their carers that will sustain them for their next 4 years.

Takes a special breed of person to dedicate themselves to the SANFL for the minimum chips that they get paid.

Currently, what we also don't know as the clubs keep them to themselves, that for every player they've lost/cut there has at least one other invited to do pre-season which isn't publicised or if it is not until December.

Also Clubs are also actively talking to recruits or have signed recruits pending the outcome of the two drafts. These "in's" will be announced at a later date.

Has the SANFL lost it's prestige compared to 20-30 years ago, yep
Does it lose arguably more good players than what it did 20-30 years ago, yep
Will it continue to attract good players who want to test themselves sat the highest level outside of the AFL (WAFL/VFL not that far behind), yep

Still a damn good competition
