Buckley Sympathy? Buckley's Chance!

Postby daveswar » Sat Sep 15, 2007 3:14 pm

Is it just me or are other people sick of hearing how Buckley deserves a flag @ AFL level. Many players never see a GF in their careers. Buckley has a Senior Premiership (as we in SA know) and IMHO ran away from 3 more(Leaving Brisbane that is). It's fitting to me that it was Brisbane that denied him twice as he can be loosely quoted as leaving 'Brisbane to play finals footy.' I feel it would be footy justice for him to retire without that flag.
Any thoughts?

I agree, you make the bed you lay in it...If he stayed at Brisbane instead of "chasing" glory he would have three. Too bad he was greedy looking for glory and $$$$....

I'm not sure premierships are deserved or not deserved to the individual. You either play in them or you don't. Whether Buckley gets a premiership or not shouldn't make a difference to how he is regarded as a footballer.

if he chose to stay at the lions (Bears), he would of had three premiership medals, however, in Buckley's eyes, the Lions were never going to win a flag

he made his bed, mow he can lie in it

I am agreeing with the consensus in this thread

I don't think that Bucks is any more deserving than anyone other player who makes a commitment and pulls on the boots.

As Aerie says, you don't get a premiership medal because you 'deserve' it, it either happens or it doesn't depending on a whole range of factors.

If 'deserving' it was how it worked then Aaron Keating would never have a medallian over guys like Scott West, Chris Grant, Robert Harvey, Bucks, Crawford

The thinking is that players who have 10+ playing years,250 games,Brownlows,
numerous club B&F's deserve it more than others who haven't done this.
The comparison with Aaron Keating is a good one.
Would it be fair to say that since Buckley has worked harder and contributed more to the game than Keating did, does that make him more deserving of a flag than what Keating was?

Keating is almost a unique case tho it's difficult to justify the footy gods call there

But in most cases, any player commits a lot to play just one season, let alone 5 or 10 - and so is equally deserving IMO. Who's to judge who worked harder? Is Bucks more deserving because he's a better player?

The Footy gods would say yes.
You would think that the best players would always have a better chance than hacks.
Good players tend to play in good teams and hacks tend to play in hack teams.(Generally speaking)

It that because he is perceived as a nicer guy?
BTW, Harvey is the perfect example of champion player who had no hope at
a hack club.
