Big loss for Hahndorf assuming this takes away his ability to play for coach them?
Anyone with any juicy rumors of departures / arrivals even at this early stage?

Yep is a big loss for Hahndorf but we proved that we can win games without him last year. Were looking at getting more ex Australia players to play 1 off games for us as a bit of a promotional thing. Think Andrew Symonds, Matthew Hayden and even Adam Gilchrist to come play 1 off games. Will be great.

The A&EHCA looks like it will maintain the same 9 A Grade teams in 2019/2020. The newcomers in Mt Barker and Bremer/Callington struggled for parts of last season but also pulled off some great wins against more fancied opponents so its good to see both clubs sticking at it.

TVCA news:

Rose Park CC have sadly met their demise, pulling the pin after just 2 years in our comp. Really enjoyed playing them and sharing a drink afterwards.
Eden Valley to return to A Grade and are hopeful of filling a B's. Birdwood unsure of their future, and may opt just to field a B's. Mt Torrens to field just the one side again, while all other clubs confident of having two teams.
A Grade games will stay at 40 overs
A motion was put forth to allow abandoned semi finals (due to weather) to be played on the sunday, but this was unfortunately knocked back by 5 of the 8 clubs. Bit of a farce IMO.
No junior comps. The clubs that typically have juniors (Lens, Birdy, Cambrai, Springton) to again be involved with AEHCA.

Of course  I think we'll need him again in the B's, so hopefully he can drag his body around for another season.

He'll be "out there".

Does he still try pretending that he mis-fielded the ball for a sneaky run out?

Yep, still his signature move. Either that or motioning to sneak a quick single in the hope of a misfield, which confuses the hell out the other batsman and half the time they get run out

Folded. Cougar may be able to shed more light on it, but from what we were told at the TVCA meeting their AGM was poorly attended and nobody really felt inclined to nominate for positions at the club. They struggled to field a B grade last year and forfeited most games, and even in the A's sometimes appeared to be a player or two short when on the long trips to Cambrai/Palmer etc. Was always a curious decision to join our comp, although it made some sense given Houghton was their base. As I said above I enjoyed playing against them, and they brought something different to the comp as they had some ridiculously talented players and a broad multicultural mix.

Folded unfortunately. Our numbers were fading and really struggling to find people to take care of the responsibilities in running a cricket club.

The Club enjoyed its 2 years in the TVCA but probably geographically the challenge was too great to continue.

On a positive note Re player numbers I see Nairne Cricket Club will be fielding 6 junior teams this season, including 2 x U14s and 2 x u16s , that’s a great effort!! Looking for a couple more U14s and U16s to fill the two teams. Need a club for your u14 or u16 lad to play ......Nairne might be the go.

Credit to Nairne for attracting such good numbers
Real worry tho with some other clubs really struggling for numbers and not only smaller clubs
Mt Barker last year had no U/16s, had only 2 players i believe, not sure of their numbers this year
Heard that last years u/16s Premiers Strathalbyn have only 3 players this year so unlikely to have a team which is a real worry considering other ex Alexandra and neighboring clubs in Milang, Finniss & Ashbourne dont have U/16s whilst i believe L Creek have about half a team.
Challenging times ahead for many Clubs as where do their future Senior players come from if they have a lack of junior participation?
Not a new problem i know but ..........

100% agree with you Jim. Full credit to Nairne, they definitely have the best Junior program going around. I have heard positive things coming out of Wistow in regards to junior teams which is great. Looks like they might get their own U16 side. At Hahndorf we will have sides in 10, 12 14 and 16 but its always a battle.

Jim would you consider putting in a side with Strath? The team you had last year in 16s had Barker lads as well. I have no idea where Woodside are at juniors wise as well. Lobethal have lost some serious quality from their under 16s but looks like they should get a side together. There is a Junior commitee meeting on the 23rd which will be a good place to discuss how we can get the maximum number of lads playing every week.

A Creek / Strath combined U/16s may certainly be a possibility
The good thing about Clubs in the A&EHCA is that they generally work together well for the benefit of their juniors

Season starts today for A Grade only in A&EHCA
Should be a very intriguing season with certainly no clear favorite for the flag to start with
Out of the 9 teams there's maybe 6 main hopes for mine, those being in no particular order Lobethal, Woodside, Hahndorf, Strath, Nairne and reigning Premiers Langhorne Creek. Bremer / Callington surprised last year and i'd expect further improvement and wouldn't be surprised if they finish above a couple of the above mentioned teams. Wistow and Mt Barker may well be competitive but would be very surprising if the pushed for Finals

Round 1 games

Hahndorf v Lobethal - Hahndorf were the benchmark last season before stumbling in the GF losing in spectacular fashion off the last ball of the match from a seemingly unlosable position. No Shaun Tait this season will hurt them tho they should still be around the mark. Lobethal had a shocking start to the season last year which included being disqualified in one match. They were the form team of the comp after Christmas but were giving an impossible start to make finals and ended up narrowly missing. Certainly will be around the mark come finals time.
Tip - Hahndorf only because its at home but could go either way.

Woodside v Nairne - Perennial Finalists Woodside lost the plot with the bat late last season to see them bundled out in straight sets. The reported return of the legendary Nick "Slim" Johns may inspire them. Nairne missed the finals for the 1st time for over a decade and will be keen to get back into it. The gradual loss of some star premiership players in recent years has taken the aura of the side until their younger local talent step up and put their own mark on the comp.
Tip - Another toss of the coin job, again the home team for that reason alone - Woodside

Bremer/Callington v Mt Barker - these 2 had some good battles last season even tho B/C took all 3 clashes. With B/C picking up former local class player Jai McMurtrie they should be far too good for the Kookaburras who i heard a whisper have quite a few missing for this clash.
Tip - B/C comfortably

Strath v L Creek - Creek beat Strath in the last minor round match to make finals and then repeated the dose the week after in the Semi Final before going on to claim the Flag. Little has separated the 2 teams in recent years and on that fact one would expect this match to be a beauty except it is Round 1. The significance of Round 1 is that the Creeks basically havent won a Round 1 clash in the last 20 years. Too break the hoodoo the Creeks arranged a trial match last week for the 1st time in 40 years, losing in the process in an effort to fool the curse. Unfortunately for them it's unlikely to break the cycle barring a monumental upset as the Creeks will be fielding a shadow of the Premiership team (for round 1 at least) from 6 months ago whilst Strath with a few handy players returning appear to be a very solid unit.
Tip - Strath

Wistow have the Bye
