Press conferences - do we really get anything out of them?

Postby Cambridge Clarrie » Mon Sep 10, 2007 5:00 pm

After listening to the absolute rubbish Worsfold was subjected to Friday night, I asked myself this question.

The number of amateur journalistic hacks around who ask the absolute obvious (or absolute bizarre) seems to be growing.

If I was a coach I'd be pretty fed up with it all.

The best questions are the most obvious ones.

And the most obvious questions are the ones the public want to hear the answers to.

However, I do often wonder whether the coaches could be a little more responsive in the conferences. They're often like politicians, answering every question rather than the one asked.

Why would you want to hear the answer to a question you already know the answer to (if it's obvious?).

You want to hear the coach/player confirm your thoughts - that's why you want the obvious question. And if they didn't ask the obvious question, people would criticise them for being too obtuse with their questioning.

And what do you mean by amateur journalist hacks?

Waste of time in my opinion.

You already know the answer before the coach replies to 99% of the questions. Similar to player interview Qs really.

Yeah, nah, we don't get a heap out of them. Maybe a couple of creative questions/answers but that's all. Basically they take one week at a time.

You get very little out of Press Conferences especially from coaches such as Woosha.

The questions i would like to hear are, and answered are things like?

Why was Chick left on Motlop when he was destroying him

Why does the best backmen continue to isolate Rowan Jones and beat him easily week in week out.

Why havent Waters skills improved when he has been on the list for a number of years

Why do WCE continue to pick Judd when he is clearly not even 50% and keeping out a bloke who could make a difference.

Why does Brent Staker continue to dominate one week then not be seen for the next month?

Will WCE target Fevola or a KP Forward?

If press conferences had these sort of questions and they were answered honestly then they might be worth listening to... At the moment they are not..

I really enjoyed Alistair Clarkson's press conference after the Hawks win on Saturday.. was very informative and he spoke very well in my opinion... was great to see him so genuinely pleased with his players' performances.

Pagan and Sheedy are classics (or were sorry) over a number of years, they just sat back and most the time took the crap out of the journos, Dean Laidley is another that doesn't take kindly to their crap questions
