AFL Indigenous Round - Sir Doug Nicholls Round

Post by Booney »

Bit of chatter on the socials around your favorite indigenous player ahead of this weeks indigenous round.

So, how about your top 5, not just your favorite?

I forgot about Buddy.

Sure you couldn’t find any other indigenous Sydney players to put on your list?
O’Loughlin?

Definitely not. I obviously rate him but he certainly doesn’t belong in the discussion in the greatest ever

Goodes records speaks for itself and same for Franklin. He belonged on this list before he even became a swan

Mine - ( in no particular order )

Byron Pickett, well known for his ability to send someone into the future but perhaps under appreciated for his ability to play the game, he had skill to burn. Brilliant and brutal, my type of player.

Lance Franklin, might just be the greatest player I have seen, not just indigenous, his ability to do the miraculous over and over for a bloke his size is unbelievable. In my view the greatest key position indigenous player.

Gavin Wanganeen, what more can be said about this bloke, a Port Adelaide boy who made himself known to the football world as a 19 year old being the first indigenous player to win a Brownlow and led Port Adelaide to our first AFL premiership.

Shaun Burgoyne, can play anywhere and has done so and done it well. Started back with Port, went into the middle, played forward but has settled as a back/mid, goes to equal 10th on the all time games list with his next game.

Nicky Winmar, the first indigenous player from my childhood that stood out for his brilliance and who couldn't stand behind a man who took on the Victoria Park faithful on behalf of his people?

Brisbane's jumper, IMO, was the worst one.

West Coast, Adelaide and Sydney's all very good.

Pickett and Winmar were great players but better than McLeod?

That’s what’s good about these lists.

Maybe not better, but I enjoyed watching them more.

Honestly greatest of all time would have to be:
1. Franklin
2. Goodes
3. Wanganeen
4. McLeod
5. Matera

In that order.

Difficult task you set Boon. I did not ever see Polly Farmer play...... but by all reports!! Throw in Barry Cable, Stephen Michael as well. Lets not forget Maurice Rioli while we stroll down memory lane.

However I have settled on more modern day players for the sake of the exercise.

1. Wanganeen. Freak even at 16 when he first played for Port in SANFL.
2. Franklin.
3. S Burgoyne
4. Goodes - as much as I don't care for the bloke
5. Cyril

Special mentions to Nicky Winmar, Michael Long & Peter Matera.

Mcleod while a damn good player, I did not include. I guess my memories of him, include him playing off half back when he couldn't shake a tag in the mids. It's difficult to shake a tag when you walk around the ground though!
1961, 1971, 1976, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015.... And don't you forget it!

Cyril is an interesting one. Very good player, but I see him in the o’loughlin group. In the sense they are very good but not in the mix in this discussion.
