I remember this from when I did Scouts, morse code is based on what letters are used the most > need to be the shortest signal. I can't remember the rest....

What you are describing is entropy coding, of which the Huffman Code is the optimal method (IIRC). Morse code is efficient but not optimal; not in the least because being a non-prefix code it is necessary to punctuate (add space) between the code symbols for disambiguation. :-B

Might be good for customers but doesn’t help their bottom line.

I think that was their last resort though as K Mart did a similar thing which worked well for KMart.

Retail will never be the same now anyway with so many options for the consumer.

Been doing it for the past 10 years minimum. Kills industries and even though they think it is smart it also is bad for certain industries.

That’s a lot of job losses if staff aren’t transferred within.

I pop into the little one at the Brickworks occasionally, they've been asking for people to fill out a survey about their customer service skills, obviously preempting this move. Poor bastards.
Would have thought stores that have leases up for renewal go first...

Was a listing I saw a couple of weeks ago, mostly country stores. Renmark and another country store (Port Augusta maybe) were the two in SA plus the Monarto distribution centre

10-15 years ago Big W was the only "cheap" department store, K-Mart targeted the same market and have dominated it, Target have been trying the same approach but are no way in the same league, they will be the next to feel the pinch.

Apparently Big W Murray Bridge will be the hardest hit, I'd say it;s a domino affect from Thomas Foods burning down.

At a guess, the lower economic area stores will remain.
